Chapter 5 - The Descent

Thick smoke billowed into the bedroom, stinging my eyes and burning my throat.
I rolled violently out of bed, ignoring the agonizing cold, and pulled Natalia and Lily to the floor.
Bullets shredded the antique furniture above us, raining sharp splinters over our heads.
"Stay down!" I roared, dragging myself toward the hidden safe behind the large painting.
My fingers felt entirely numb, but pure muscle memory punched in the digital code.
The heavy steel door swung open, revealing a hidden arsenal that could easily supply a small army.
I tossed a loaded Glock to Natalia, who caught it with practiced, deadly ease.
"Do you know how to actually use that?" I asked.
She racked the slide without a second of hesitation, her eyes narrowing dangerously.
"I am still a Volkov, Leo."
I grabbed two tactical rifles and a medical auto-injector filled with pure epinephrine.
I jammed the thick needle into my thigh, gasping heavily as liquid fire chased the ice away.
It was a dangerous, temporary fix, but it gave me enough raw strength to stand up.
I kicked the shattered remains of the bedroom door out of our way.
Three men in black tactical gear were moving down the hall with suppressed submachine guns.
I did not give them a single chance to raise their weapons.
I fired in rapid succession, dropping all three assassins before they could even pull the trigger.
"Move toward the service elevator!" I ordered, gesturing frantically for Natalia and Lily to follow.
We crept through the bloodstained hallways, stepping over the lifeless bodies of my fallen guards.
We finally reached the elevator, and I slammed my palm against the emergency call button.

The metal doors slid open, but the small cabin was not empty.
Vanessa stood inside with a bruised face, holding an assault rifle pointed straight at Lily’s chest.
