Chapter 8 - The Double Cross

I stared at the masked intruder in absolute disbelief, keeping the revolver aimed directly at his chest.

He had just casually asked my mother for payment while standing over my bleeding brother.

Patricia smiled warmly at the terrifying man, as if he were a friendly neighbor dropping by for coffee.

The money is locked inside the safe in my master bedroom upstairs, my mother lied flawlessly.

You will get your cash as soon as you finish off my remaining son.

The masked man finally turned his attention back to me, gripping the heavy steel crowbar tightly in his hands.

Two more men climbed through the shattered window behind him, one holding the smoking shotgun.

I was hopelessly outnumbered, outgunned, and trapped in a house with a dead dog and a dying brother.

Drop the gun, kid, you only have two bullets and there are three of us, the man with the shotgun sneered.

I didn't lower the revolver, knowing that the moment I disarmed myself, I was a dead man.

I fired the first shot directly at the man holding the shotgun.

The loud bang deafened me, but the bullet struck him squarely in the shoulder, dropping him instantly to the floor.

The shotgun clattered loudly onto the hardwood, sliding completely out of his reach.

The man with the crowbar roared in anger and charged aggressively across the broken glass toward me.

I pulled the trigger a second time, but the revolver only produced a hollow, metallic click.

The gun had jammed on the final bullet.

The massive man swung the heavy crowbar violently, aiming directly for my skull.

I ducked just in time, feeling the wind of the heavy steel weapon brush past my ear.

The crowbar smashed into the drywall behind me, leaving a massive, gaping hole in the plaster.

I drove my fist hard into the man's ribs, but it felt like punching a solid brick wall.

He grunted, grabbed me by the collar of my shirt, and violently threw me across the dining room.

I crashed into the ruined china cabinet, the remaining plates shattering into a million pieces around me.

The third intruder stepped past the fight and walked directly over to my mother.

He grabbed Patricia roughly by the collar of her cardigan and yanked her forcefully to her feet.

Forget the kid, lady, just give us the combination to the upstairs safe, the third man demanded aggressively.

Patricia's confident facade finally cracked, replaced by a sudden flash of genuine panic.

I will give you the combination after he is dead, my mother shrieked, struggling against his grip.

The man pulled a long, serrated hunting knife from his belt and pressed it firmly against Patricia's throat.

You are going to give me the combination right now, or I will carve it out of you, the intruder threatened.

May you like

Suddenly, a loud, heavy thud echoed from the basement stairwell directly behind the intruder.

Lauren emerged from the shadows of the hallway, holding my brother's heavy metal toolbox high above her head.
