Chapter 5 - The Hostage Situation

The heavy barrel of the revolver remained perfectly steady in my mother's frail hand.
I slowly raised both of my hands into the air, keeping my phone's flashlight pointed at the ceiling to illuminate the room.
Put the gun down, Mom, I said softly, trying to de-escalate the terrifying situation.
I cannot do that, Daniel, Patricia replied, her voice completely devoid of any maternal warmth.
The poison was supposed to look like a sudden, tragic heart attack during Thanksgiving dinner.
But your annoying child had to complain about the smell, and ruined my entire plan.
Ethan whimpered from behind Lauren, terrified of the grandmother he used to love.
What are you going to do now, shoot us all, Chris asked, his voice shaking with raw terror.
No, Christopher, I am just going to shoot your brother, Patricia said logically.
Then I am going to tell the police that the loan sharks broke in, killed him, and fled into the night.
Megan slowly crawled backward on the floor, trying to put distance between herself and the gun.
The police will find the padlocks and know it was an inside job, I reasoned with her.
They will blame Christopher for the locks, which perfectly aligns with the loan shark story, my mother countered smoothly.
She had thought of absolutely every single detail to ensure she walked away with the insurance money.
You cannot kill him, Lauren cried out, stepping bravely in front of me to shield my body.
Patricia's eyes narrowed maliciously as she aimed the revolver directly at Lauren's face.
Move out of the way, Lauren, or I will kill you first and blame it on the intruders too, Patricia threatened.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the kitchen behind us.
Tyler had quietly slipped away in the darkness and knocked a massive stack of ceramic plates onto the tile floor.
The deafening sound of shattering glass startled my mother, causing her to flinch and look toward the kitchen.
It was the only distraction I was going to get.
I lunged forward across the dining room table, kicking the dead dog's body out of my way.
I slammed my entire body weight into my mother's frail shoulders, driving her backward toward the wall.
Patricia screamed in pure rage as we crashed into the heavy wooden china cabinet.
The revolver discharged with a deafening bang that temporarily deafened everyone in the room.
A bright flash of muzzle fire illuminated the dining room for a fraction of a second.
I grabbed my mother's wrist and twisted it violently until the gun clattered onto the hardwood floor.
I pinned her to the ground, my chest heaving with adrenaline, ready to scream for Lauren to grab the weapon.
But a horrifying, wet gurgling sound stopped me dead in my tracks.
May you like
I turned my head and aimed my flashlight back toward the center of the room.
Chris was standing near the table, clutching his stomach as dark crimson blood poured through his fingers.
