Chapter 3 - The Brother's Secret

The darkness swallowed the dining room instantly, leaving only the faint glow of the moonlight bleeding through the storm windows.
Lauren screamed in the pitch black, her arms wrapping tighter around Ethan.
Nobody move, I shouted, reaching into my pocket to turn on my phone's flashlight.
The harsh white LED beam cut through the dark and landed directly on my brother's terrified face.
Explain the locks right now, Chris, I demanded, stepping aggressively toward him.
Chris threw his hands up to shield his eyes from the blinding light.
I didn't turn off the power, Daniel, I swear I didn't, he stammered, backing away.
But you installed the deadbolts, I countered, keeping the light pinned firmly on him.
Chris let out a ragged breath and slumped against the hallway wall in defeat.
I owe a lot of money to some very bad people, Chris confessed, his voice trembling.
They told me they were coming to collect the debt tonight, no matter who was in the house.
I bought the padlocks to keep them out, not to trap us inside.
Megan gasped in the dark, her silhouette stepping closer to her husband.
You borrowed money from those loan sharks again, Megan shrieked, her voice echoing with panic.
I was trying to save our business, Megan, we were bankrupt, Chris fired back defensively.
I kept the flashlight steady, refusing to let my brother play the victim.
If you locked the doors to keep debt collectors out, why did your wife just try to poison me, I asked coldly.
Chris looked at Megan, pure confusion washing over his face in the harsh light.
I have no idea what she put in your food, Daniel, Chris said, sounding genuinely horrified.
Megan burst into tears, dropping to her knees on the hardwood floor.
They cornered me at the grocery store yesterday morning, Megan sobbed into her hands.
The men Chris owes money to handed me that brown bottle.
They said if I didn't put it in your food, they would take Tyler away forever.
Tyler let out a terrified whimper from the corner of the room.
Lauren gently guided Ethan behind her back and stepped toward Megan's abandoned purse on the chair.
Lauren grabbed the leather bag, dumped the contents onto the table, and sifted through the items in the dark.
Her hand stopped on a thick, folded stack of legal documents hidden at the bottom of the purse.
Daniel, Lauren whispered, unfolding the heavy paper under the beam of my flashlight.
This isn't just about Chris owing money to loan sharks.
I moved the light closer to read the bold black text at the top of the page.
It was a newly drafted life insurance policy taken out in my name.

The payout amount was listed as exactly two million dollars.
And the sole primary beneficiary listed on the document was my brother, Chris.
