Chapter 4 - The True Beneficiary

I stared at the two-million-dollar life insurance policy, my blood running completely cold.

My own brother had forged my signature to place a massive bounty on my head.

You needed me dead to pay off your debts, I said, my voice dangerously calm.

Chris violently shook his head, his eyes widening in absolute panic as he stared at the paper.

I didn't take out that policy, Daniel, I swear on my life, Chris desperately pleaded.

Then why is it sitting inside your wife's purse, Lauren demanded, holding the document up in the air.

Megan looked up from the floor, wiping away her mascara-stained tears.

I found that envelope in the guest room upstairs when we arrived today, Megan sniffled.

I put it in my purse because I was going to ask Chris about it later.

I didn't know what it was, and I certainly didn't sign it.

If Chris didn't forge the document, and Megan didn't know about it, only one person could have drafted it.

I slowly moved the beam of my flashlight away from Chris and aimed it toward the head of the dining table.

Patricia sat perfectly still in the darkness, completely unbothered by the chaos unfolding around her.

My fragile, elderly mother was no longer clutching her pearls or pretending to be in shock.

She sat with her back straight, her hands folded neatly in her lap, staring directly into the harsh light.

You did this, I whispered, the horrifying realization crashing over me like a physical wave.

Patricia let out a long, disappointed sigh that sounded exactly like the one she gave Ethan earlier.

You were always so quick to jump to conclusions, Daniel, my mother said in a calm, icy tone.

You are the one who forged the insurance documents, I accused her, stepping cautiously around the dead dog.

I simply updated an old policy I took out on you when you were a teenager, Patricia replied smoothly.

The family estate is facing foreclosure next month because your brother is a pathetic failure.

Chris let out a choked gasp, entirely paralyzed by his own mother's cruel words.

I needed the estate paid off, and you were too selfish to lend us the money, Patricia continued without a shred of remorse.

So you blackmailed Megan into poisoning my food, I asked, feeling physically sick to my stomach.

I hired the men who approached her at the grocery store, my mother admitted flawlessly.

I knew she was weak enough to do it if they threatened her precious son.

Lauren grabbed my arm tightly, pulling me slightly backward toward the kitchen doorway.

You are a monster, Lauren whispered into the dark room.

Patricia slowly stood up from her dining chair, her bad knees suddenly supporting her perfectly.

She reached into the deep pocket of her knitted cardigan and pulled out a heavy object.

May you like

The beam of my flashlight caught the dull, metallic gleam of a loaded revolver.

I am a mother protecting her home, Patricia said, pointing the gun directly at my chest.
