Chapter 1 - The Mercer Name
I stared at Marco as the terrible weight of his words settled over the quiet hospital corridor.
My own flesh and blood had done this to the woman I loved.
I asked Marco for the specific name of the family member who had betrayed her.
Marco kept his voice dangerously low as he handed me a printed financial dossier.
He explained that a massive shell company had systematically frozen all of Elena’s personal bank accounts.
That same shell company had purchased her apartment building and ordered her immediate eviction two weeks ago.
The digital signatures on the corporate acquisition documents belonged to my younger brother.
Julian Mercer was the only person I had fully trusted to protect my assets after the divorce.
I looked down at the sealed envelope the emergency room doctor had just handed to me.
My hands shook with a violent rage as I tore open the paper to read Elena’s final message.
The handwritten letter explained that Julian had threatened to murder me if she ever revealed her pregnancy.
Julian had forced her into complete poverty to ensure she would eventually miscarry my only heir.
I carefully folded the letter and placed it into the inner pocket of my tailored suit.
I promised myself that Julian would beg for mercy before the sun came up tomorrow.
A female nurse suddenly walked into the intensive care room pushing a stainless steel medical cart.
I noticed that her blue scrubs were wrinkled and her medical identification badge had no photograph.
Marco immediately stepped in front of the door to block her exit.
