Chapter 8 - The Mexican Standoff

Daniel leaned heavily against the doorframe, his face pale and covered in sweat from the physical exertion.
I rushed forward and helped him stay upright, shocked that he had managed to follow me in his condition.
He told me that Ellen had insisted on coming along, refusing to sit in a safe house while I risked my life.
I looked out into the hallway and saw Ellen holding a small pistol, covering the rear exit with terrifying focus.
We didn't have time to celebrate the reunion, because the building alarms began blaring loudly.
Daniel said we needed to get to David’s executive suite on the top floor and secure his physical ledger before the police arrived.
We fought our way up the final flights of stairs, neutralizing two more corrupt guards along the way.
We kicked open the double mahogany doors of the executive penthouse and burst into the room.
David was standing behind his massive desk, frantically shredding documents into a high-powered machine.
Michael and Cassandra were standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding duffel bags filled with cash.
They were preparing to flee to the roof and escape via a private helicopter.
I raised my weapon and aimed it directly at David’s chest, demanding he step away from the shredder.
Michael pulled a gun from his waistband and aimed it at his mother, his face twisted in desperate rage.
He screamed that if we did not let them leave, he would shoot the woman who gave him life.
The room descended into a terrifying Mexican standoff, everyone's finger hovering dangerously over their triggers.
Ellen did not flinch, keeping her own weapon aimed squarely at Cassandra's head.
David laughed nervously, trying to negotiate a peaceful exit by offering me ten million dollars in offshore accounts.
I told him his money was worthless, and he was going to rot in a federal prison for the rest of his life.
Cassandra suddenly sighed, dropping her duffel bag onto the luxurious carpet.
She looked at Michael with absolute disgust and slowly raised her own weapon.
Instead of aiming at us, Cassandra pointed her gun directly at Michael’s temple.
She revealed that she was not a syndicate operative at all, but rather an undercover Interpol agent tracking David’s global network.
She ordered Michael to drop his weapon immediately, stating she had enough evidence to put all of them away.

Michael’s eyes widened in sheer panic, realizing his entire marriage and criminal empire was a carefully constructed lie.
In a moment of pure, unadulterated madness, David pulled a hidden shotgun from under his desk and fired wildly into the room.
