Chapter 1 - The Flash Drive

I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned completely white under the dashboard lights.

The small silver flash drive rested in my jacket pocket like a ticking time bomb.

My mind kept replaying the silent, cruel footage of my son shoving his mother to the floor.

I had spent twenty-eight years raising Michael to be a good, honorable man.

I had paid for his college, funded his first business, and welcomed Cassandra into our family with open arms.

The realization that they were monsters hiding behind designer clothes made my blood run cold.

I pulled into our driveway, cutting the engine and staring at the dark windows of our house.

Ellen was upstairs, likely still awake, nursing a bruised knee and a broken heart.

I took a deep breath, forcing my face into a mask of calm ignorance.

I could not confront her yet, because if Michael realized I knew the truth, he would cover his tracks.

I unlocked the front door and crept quietly into my first-floor study.

The glow of my computer monitor illuminated the dark room as I plugged the flash drive into the port.

I watched the footage again, pausing exactly on the moment Cassandra slapped the gift box out of Ellen’s hands.

I zoomed in on the small box, trying to identify what had caused such a violent reaction.

It was not a piece of jewelry or a sentimental family heirloom.

The box had popped open when it hit the floor, revealing a folded stack of heavy legal parchment.

I enhanced the image, adjusting the contrast until the bold text at the top of the document became visible.

It was a property deed to Ellen’s ancestral home in upstate New York.

My heart hammered in my chest as a horrifying realization washed over me.

Michael and Cassandra had not just assaulted my wife out of petty cruelty or wedding day stress.

They had physically forced her to bring the deed to the venue so they could coerce her into signing it.

I immediately opened my secure banking app to check the financial accounts tied to that property.

The screen loaded slowly, the spinning icon mocking my rising panic.

When the dashboard finally appeared, every single dollar in our joint savings account was gone.

A massive transfer of three million dollars had been executed just hours before the wedding ceremony.

I frantically clicked on the transaction details to see where our life savings had been moved.

The destination account did not belong to Michael or Cassandra.

The money had been wired to a notorious offshore holding company currently under federal investigation for money laundering.

Before I could even process the magnitude of this theft, my cell phone vibrated violently on the desk.

I answered the unknown number, keeping my voice low so I would not wake my wife.

A mechanically disguised voice echoed through the speaker, chilling me to the bone.

The caller told me that if I ever wanted to see my wife alive again, I needed to step outside immediately.

I dropped the phone, sprinting out of the study and rushing up the stairs to our bedroom.

I threw the bedroom door open, ready to fight anyone who dared to touch my wife.

The bed was completely empty, the sheets were still cold, and the bedroom window was wide open to the night air.
