Chapter 2 - The Empty Bed

I stared at the empty mattress in absolute disbelief.

The cold night wind blew through the open window, knocking a framed photograph off the bedside table.

I ran to the window and leaned out, scanning the dark suburban lawn for any sign of a struggle.

There were heavy boot prints crushed into the flowerbed directly below our room.

Someone had climbed up the trellis, entered our home, and taken Ellen while I was sitting downstairs.

Panic clawed at my throat, threatening to suffocate me.

I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and dialed Michael’s number, my hands shaking violently.

He answered on the second ring, his voice thick with sleep and perfectly feigned innocence.

He asked me what was wrong and why I was calling so late at night.

I screamed into the receiver, demanding to know what he and his new bride had done to his mother.

Michael let out a soft, condescending sigh that made my blood boil.

He told me to calm down and stop acting like a paranoid old man.

He claimed that Ellen had called Cassandra crying, saying she needed a few days away because I was being verbally abusive.

I froze, completely stunned by the sheer audacity of his lie.

He said they had sent a private car to pick her up, and she was currently resting safely at their penthouse.

I knew he was lying, because Ellen would never leave our home in the middle of the night without her shoes or her coat.

I told Michael I was coming over right now to see her with my own eyes.

His tone shifted from patronizing to dangerously cold.

He warned me that if I came anywhere near his building, building security would arrest me for trespassing.

He then casually mentioned that the police had already been notified about my supposed history of domestic violence.

They were using Ellen’s bruises from the wedding assault to frame me for elder abuse.

I hung up the phone, my mind racing through a million terrifying scenarios.

I needed help, but going to the local police was a trap.

I remembered Daniel Pierce, the venue manager who had secretly shown me the footage.

Daniel had risked his own job to show me the truth, which meant he possessed a conscience.

I called the number Daniel had used to contact me earlier that day.

He answered immediately, sounding wide awake and incredibly tense.

I told him that Michael had taken Ellen and was planning to frame me for her injuries.

Daniel told me to pack a bag, leave all my electronics behind, and meet him at a downtown diner in twenty minutes.

I grabbed my wallet, a spare set of car keys, and a heavy flashlight for protection.

I drove through the empty streets, constantly checking my rearview mirror to make sure I was not being followed.

I arrived at the neon-lit diner and found Daniel sitting in a booth at the very back.

He slid a thick manila envelope across the table as soon as I sat down.

Daniel told me he was not just a venue manager.

He unzipped his jacket, revealing a silver badge and a holstered weapon.

He explained that he was an undercover federal agent investigating Cassandra’s family for a string of violent corporate takeovers.

He said Cassandra’s real name was Elena Rostova, and she was an operative for a ruthless international crime syndicate.

Daniel looked me dead in the eye and delivered the final, devastating blow.

He told me that my son was not a victim of her manipulation, but rather the mastermind who had hired her in the first place.
