Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The officers violently slammed Daniel to the hardwood floor, quickly securing his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs.
He screamed my name, begging me to tell them it was all a simple misunderstanding and that he belonged there.
I stood perfectly still, watching the son I had sacrificed everything for being dragged out of my house like a common criminal.
"You did the right thing, Margaret," the lead officer said softly, recognizing the profound pain in my eyes.
I nodded slowly, completely exhausted by the emotional whirlwind of the last forty-eight hours.
Arthur had proactively called the police to perform a welfare check on me after I filed the fraud report.
His brilliant foresight had likely saved my life from Daniel's violent, desperate rampage.
The police documented the extensive damage to my living room and formally charged Daniel with burglary and assault.
Added to the massive federal forgery charges, my son was now facing decades behind bars.
Over the next few weeks, the local news was absolutely dominated by the spectacular downfall of Vanessa's corrupt family.
Her father was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison for operating the massive corporate Ponzi scheme.
Vanessa completely turned on her own family to secure a plea deal, throwing her parents entirely under the bus.
She filed for a rapid annulment from Daniel, citing his severe criminal charges to sever their toxic legal ties completely.
Daniel was left absolutely alone in a cold jail cell, facing the terrifying reality of his massive mistakes.
I spent my time cleaning up my house, installing a new security system, and finally focusing entirely on my own happiness.
I took long walks around my beautiful lake house, enjoying the serene peace that I had fiercely protected.
One sunny afternoon, I was sitting on the wooden dock, sipping tea and watching the peaceful water ripple.
My cell phone rang, displaying the official number of the county jail where Daniel was being held.
I stared at the screen for a long time before finally pressing the green answer button.
"Mom, please, you have to talk to me," Daniel's voice cracked pitifully through the small speaker.
"I am listening, Daniel," I replied coldly, absolutely refusing to offer any maternal warmth.
"I made a terrible mistake, and I am so incredibly sorry for how I treated you at the wedding," he sobbed desperately.
I knew he was only apologizing because he had absolutely nothing and no one left in his life.
"Your apology is twenty years too late, and it is entirely motivated by your current zip code," I stated firmly.
Daniel gasped, realizing that his usual manipulative tactics were completely failing on me.
"Please, Mom, if you just drop the forgery charges, I can get out of here and make everything right!" he pleaded.
"I will never drop the charges, Daniel, because you finally need to face the consequences of your own actions," I replied.

I hung up the phone and completely blocked the jail's number, officially severing my toxic ties to my son forever.
As I turned to walk back up to the house, I noticed a strange black speedboat idling suspiciously near my private dock.
