Chapter 5 - The Forged Signature

I stared at the forged signature on the legal document, my hands violently trembling with pure rage.

My own son had committed severe identity theft to secure a loan for a family of complete criminals.

He had intentionally risked my financial stability, my home, and my entire future just to appease Vanessa.

I walked back into my house and immediately called my oldest friend and trusted lawyer, Arthur.

I quickly explained the forged loan, the threatening corporate lawyers, and Daniel's massive betrayal.

Arthur listened quietly before letting out a long, heavy sigh that spoke volumes about the gravity of the situation.

"Margaret, if you report the forgery to the police, Daniel will absolutely go to federal prison for a very long time," Arthur warned.

I sank onto my living room sofa, completely torn between my maternal instincts and my desperate need for self-preservation.

If I did nothing, the corporate lawyers would ruthlessly seize the lake house and completely destroy my retirement.

"I am not going to lose my parents' legacy because my son is a foolish, arrogant criminal," I stated firmly.

I asked Arthur to draft an official affidavit completely denying any knowledge or involvement in the fraudulent loan.

I was entirely prepared to let Daniel face the severe consequences of his own disastrous choices.

The next morning, I drove to the local police precinct to file a formal fraud report against my own child.

When I walked into the busy lobby, I saw Vanessa sitting on a hard plastic chair, wearing wrinkled civilian clothes.

She had clearly been released on bail and looked completely exhausted, stripped of all her arrogant glamour.

She spotted me walking toward the front desk and immediately rushed over to block my path.

"Margaret, please, you have to withdraw the fraud report!" Vanessa begged, tears streaming down her pale face.

"How do you know I am filing a report?" I asked, completely suspicious of her sudden presence.

Vanessa admitted that Daniel had confessed the forgery to her last night in a moment of pure panic.

"If he goes to prison, I will be completely alone and absolutely penniless," she sobbed pathetically.

I looked at the woman who had intentionally placed me by the trash cans at her lavish wedding.

"You are already penniless, Vanessa, and you are exactly where you truly deserve to be," I replied coldly.

I stepped around her and handed my completed paperwork directly to the desk sergeant.

Vanessa screamed in frustration and aggressively grabbed my arm, completely losing her fragile temper.

"You are a terrible mother, and I will make sure Daniel hates you forever!" she shrieked hysterically.

Suddenly, a tall detective walked out of the back office and placed his hand firmly on Vanessa's shoulder.

"Vanessa, you are under arrest for witness intimidation and severe violation of your bail conditions," the detective announced.
