Chapter 4 - The Threat

I cautiously approached my front door, keeping a very close eye on the suspicious black vehicle.

The driver's side window slowly rolled down, revealing a man wearing a sharp, expensive suit and a cold expression.

"Margaret Hale?" the man asked in a deep, gravelly voice that made the hairs on my arms stand up.

I stopped on the bottom step of my porch, clutching my purse tightly against my chest.

"Who is asking?" I replied, completely refusing to confirm my identity to a menacing stranger.

The man stepped out of the vehicle, holding a thick legal folder in his massive right hand.

"I represent the corporate victims of the massive fraud perpetrated by Vanessa's family," he stated professionally.

He explained that his clients were aggressively seeking complete financial restitution by any means necessary.

"That has absolutely nothing to do with me, I am just the groom's mother," I declared defensively.

The man chuckled softly, a terrifying sound that completely lacked any human warmth or empathy.

"Unfortunately, Daniel co-signed a massive business loan for Vanessa's father just three weeks ago," he revealed.

My heart sank entirely into my stomach as the sheer stupidity of my son's actions washed over me.

Daniel had legally tied himself to a massive criminal enterprise just to impress his arrogant, wealthy in-laws.

"Because Daniel is now legally liable, we are actively seizing all marital assets to satisfy the debt," the man warned.

He held up a glossy photograph of my beautiful, historic lake house sitting peacefully on the water.

"Daniel told us that he holds the deed to this incredibly valuable property, and we are here to collect it."

I realized Daniel had lied to them, claiming he already owned the house to buy himself more time.

"Daniel does not own that house, the deed is solely in my name and safely locked in a bank vault," I told him proudly.

The man's cold smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, calculating aggression.

"If you do not sign that property over to us by tomorrow morning, Daniel will be facing severe federal conspiracy charges."

He tossed the legal folder onto my front lawn and climbed back into his dark SUV without another word.

I watched him drive away, completely terrified by the dangerous mess my son had foolishly dragged me into.

I picked up the folder and quickly thumbed through the heavily redacted legal documents inside.

The paperwork clearly showed that Daniel had forged my signature as a secondary guarantor on the massive loan.
