Chapter 1 - The Departure

The sharp click of my heels against the pavement felt incredibly steady and calm.
I slid into the driver's seat of my practical sedan and closed the door with a satisfying thud.
Through the rearview mirror, I watched my son, Daniel, sprinting down the stone path.
Vanessa was trailing closely behind him, frantically lifting the heavy lace of her expensive wedding gown to avoid tripping.
"Mom, wait!" Daniel shouted, completely ignoring the curious stares of the valet attendants.
I started the engine, feeling absolutely no desire to roll down my window and listen to their desperate apologies.
I slowly pulled out of the venue parking lot, ignoring the sight of my son waving his arms in the air.
As I drove away, I looked down at the thick cream envelope resting safely on the passenger seat.
The deed to the lake house was completely pristine, free from the greedy hands that had just insulted me.
My phone immediately began buzzing wildly in the cup holder with back-to-back calls from Daniel.
I turned the phone over, determined to enjoy the quiet drive back to my empty house.
The evening air felt surprisingly light, as if a massive, suffocating weight had finally been lifted off my shoulders.
For months, I had endured Vanessa's passive-aggressive insults and Daniel's cowardly silence just to keep the peace.
I had convinced myself that paying for the rehearsal dinner would somehow buy my way back into my son's life.
But sitting beside the trash cans proved that my unconditional love was nothing more than an ugly punchline to them.
I pulled into my quiet driveway and walked into my dark, peaceful living room.
I poured myself a glass of cheap wine and sat on the sofa, feeling completely at peace with my decision.
Suddenly, my landline telephone began to ring, piercing the comfortable silence of my home.
I answered it cautiously, fully expecting Daniel to yell at me for ruining his perfect reception.
Instead, a frantic, highly professional voice echoed through the old receiver.
"Margaret Hale, this is Richard from the country club venue, we have a massive emergency regarding the catering bill."
I frowned in complete confusion.
"The catering bill was paid in full by Vanessa's parents weeks ago," I corrected him firmly.

Richard let out a deeply stressed sigh that made my blood run completely ice cold.
"Ma'am, the credit card they used was just reported stolen, and the police are currently detaining the entire wedding party."
