Chapter 9 - The Eviction

The heavy bullet tore through Arthur’s shoulder, spinning him violently around before he collapsed to the floor in absolute agony.

I gasped and looked through the shattered French doors to see who had fired the shot.

Standing on the patio, bleeding heavily from his head but holding a smoking handgun, was Marcus.

He had somehow survived the hotel attack and followed us back to the estate just in time.

"Federal Agents! Drop your weapons!" a massive voice boomed through a megaphone from the front lawn.

The entire estate was suddenly swarming with heavily armored tactical teams carrying assault rifles.

Arthur’s hired guards instantly dropped their weapons and threw their hands in the air, realizing they were completely outgunned.

The FBI agents breached the study doors, quickly pinning the cartel members to the hardwood floor.

Vanessa was hyperventilating, her eyes darting frantically around the room for any possible escape route.

She looked at the federal agents, then looked directly at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"This is all your fault, you old witch!" Vanessa screamed at the top of her lungs.

She reached into the pocket of her luxurious fur coat and pulled out a sharp, silver switchblade.

In a final act of absolute desperation, Vanessa lunged across the room, aiming the deadly blade directly at my throat.

I was too shocked to move, my feet firmly rooted to the floor as the knife glinted in the flashing police lights.

Suddenly, a body violently shoved me out of the way.

Andrew threw himself entirely between me and his psychotic bride.

The silver blade plunged deeply into Andrew’s side, and he let out a horrible, breathless gasp.

"Andrew!" I screamed, catching his collapsing body as we both hit the floor hard.

An FBI agent tackled Vanessa to the ground instantly, ripping the bloody knife from her hand and slamming her face into the wooden floorboards.

Vanessa shrieked like a wild animal as the heavy steel handcuffs were aggressively ratcheted onto her wrists.

I ignored her completely, pressing my hands desperately against the rapidly bleeding wound on Andrew’s side.

"Stay with me, Andrew, please stay with me!" I begged, tears finally streaming down my face.

Andrew looked up at me, his face turning dangerously pale, but a small, peaceful smile touched his lips.

"I'm sorry, Mom," he whispered, his voice incredibly weak.

"I just wanted to make things right."

Paramedics rushed into the chaotic study, quickly pushing me aside to begin emergency trauma care on my son.

They loaded Andrew onto a stretcher and rushed him out to the waiting ambulance, the sirens wailing loudly into the night.

Sheriff Hayes walked into the room, looking down at Arthur, who was groaning in pain while being handcuffed by federal marshals.

"You were right, Eleanor," Sheriff Hayes said, helping me up from the blood-stained floor.

"We ran Arthur's fingerprints, and he is wanted for a massive string of federal racketeering and murder charges."

I watched as the police violently dragged Vanessa and her entire corrupt family out of my beautiful home.

The nightmare was finally, truly over, and the trespassers were officially evicted from Willowbrook Estate forever.

The paramedics assured me that Andrew’s knife wound missed all major organs and he was going to survive.

I walked outside, breathing in the cold, fresh air as the chaos slowly began to settle.

I reached into my deep coat pocket and pulled out the carved wooden box I had taken from the hidden safe.

I realized I finally had the peaceful moment required to see exactly what dark secret my husband had hidden from me all these years.

I opened the small wooden lid and pulled out a single, perfectly folded piece of old paper.
