Chapter 8 - The Legal Loophole

The sight of Marcus bleeding on the hotel floor sent a wave of pure, absolute terror through my veins.
Vanessa laughed out loud, clearly enjoying the look of total devastation on my face.
"My men tracked your driver back to the hotel while you were sneaking around in the dirt," Arthur explained coldly.
"He put up a decent fight, but nobody beats a cartel hit squad."
Arthur handed the tablet to Vanessa and pulled out his own heavy handgun.
"Now, Eleanor, you are going to walk back into the house and open that hidden safe for me," Arthur commanded.
I stood my ground, my hand instinctively gripping the heavy wooden box hidden deep in my coat pocket.
I knew that if I admitted the safe was already empty, they would execute both Andrew and me right here in the garden.
"Fine," I lied smoothly, raising my hands in a gesture of surrender.
"I will open the safe, but you must guarantee medical attention for Marcus immediately."
Arthur chuckled and gestured with his gun toward the French doors of the study.
"Walk," he ordered violently.
Andrew was shaking uncontrollably beside me, but I grabbed his arm and squeezed it firmly to give him strength.
We marched back into the freezing, dark study, surrounded by Arthur's heavily armed guards.
I walked slowly toward the massive fireplace, my mind desperately searching for a way out of this nightmare.
As I approached the mantle, I noticed something crucial that Arthur and his men had completely overlooked in their destructive search.
They had used a heavy sledgehammer to smash through the ornate, historical drywall near the bookshelf.
They had completely destroyed a massive, load-bearing structural beam that supported the 19th-century ceiling.
A sudden, brilliant realization hit me like a bolt of lightning.
When Richard and I restored Willowbrook, we registered the property with the National Historic Preservation Society to secure a massive tax break.
The incredibly strict legal charter contained a highly specific, unbreakable federal clause.
"Arthur," I said calmly, pausing directly in front of the destroyed wall.
"Do you have any idea what you just did to this room?"
Arthur frowned, aiming his gun directly at my head in annoyance.
"I am losing my patience, old woman. Open the safe!" he roared.
I didn't move a single inch.
"This estate is protected under a federal historical preservation trust," I explained, my voice echoing with newfound confidence.
"The charter explicitly mandates that any unapproved structural demolition automatically and immediately voids all current leases and property transfers."
Vanessa scoffed loudly, rolling her eyes in pure disgust.
"You think we care about some stupid building code violation?" she mocked.
"You should care, Vanessa," I replied with a cold, triumphant smile.
"Because the moment this load-bearing beam was destroyed, the silent structural alarm was automatically tripped."
Arthur’s face suddenly dropped, a look of genuine panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade.
"What alarm?" he demanded, looking frantically around the dark room.
"The alarm that connects directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's heritage protection division," I stated clearly.
I looked down at the expensive Rolex watch on Arthur's wrist.
"That beam was broken at least an hour ago," I calculated smoothly.
"Which means the federal marshals aren't just on their way; they are already at the front gate."
Right on cue, the deafening, terrifying sound of a heavily armored SWAT vehicle smashing through the front iron gates echoed across the property.
Massive red and blue police lights flooded through the French windows, blinding the cartel guards.

Arthur screamed in fury and aimed his gun directly at my chest, ready to kill me before he ran.
But before he could pull the heavy trigger, a deafening gunshot shattered the glass of the patio door behind him.
