Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Dirt

I completely ignored the danger of Arthur's armed guards patrolling the dark hallways.
I slipped out through the study's heavy French doors and stepped quietly into the freezing night air.
I stayed hidden in the deep shadows of the stone patio, watching my son desperately dig into the frozen earth.
Andrew was sobbing uncontrollably, his breath pluming in white clouds as he threw dirt over a bundled, blood-soaked trench coat.
"What have you done, Andrew?" I asked softly, stepping out of the shadows.
Andrew dropped the heavy metal shovel, spinning around with a look of absolute, unfiltered terror.
"Mom!" he gasped, instinctively stepping back to block my view of the shallow grave.
"I told you to wait in the car with Marcus," I said, walking slowly toward him.
I looked down at the muddy hole and recognized the distinct fabric of the coat.
It was the expensive designer trench coat Vanessa had worn to the rehearsal dinner two nights ago.
"Why are you burying your wife's bloody clothes in my garden in the middle of the night?" I demanded.
Andrew fell to his knees in the wet dirt, burying his face in his filthy, shaking hands.
"She hit someone, Mom," Andrew sobbed, his voice breaking under the weight of his horrifying secret.
"We were driving back from the rehearsal dinner, and she was heavily intoxicated."
My stomach tied itself into a violent, sickening knot as I listened to his confession.
"A man stepped out into the road, and she didn't even try to hit the brakes," Andrew cried.
"She killed him instantly, and she forced me to help her drag the body into the woods."
The sheer horror of his words paralyzed me for a moment.
"You helped her cover up a murder?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
Andrew looked up at me, his eyes wide and completely hollow.
"She told me if I didn't help her, Arthur would slaughter you in your sleep," he confessed.
"She caught the entire hit-and-run on the car's dashcam, and she edited the footage to make it look like I was driving."
He pointed a shaking, mud-caked finger at the buried coat.
"She threatened to send the video to the police if I didn't marry her and give them this estate."
I finally understood the absolute, suffocating grip this cartel family had on my foolish son.
He was not a willing participant in their hostile takeover; he was a terrified hostage being blackmailed with a murder charge.
I reached down, grabbed Andrew by his dirty lapels, and hauled him to his feet.
"We are leaving right now, and we are going straight to the FBI with this information," I ordered firmly.
"The dashcam footage is fake, and any forensic expert will prove she was the one in the driver's seat."
Before Andrew could take a single step toward the woods, a bright, blinding light snapped on from the patio.
"I wouldn't take another step if I were you, Eleanor," Vanessa's smug, arrogant voice echoed across the lawn.
I shielded my eyes from the harsh glare of the tactical flashlight.
Vanessa was standing on the patio, wearing a luxurious fur coat and holding a sleek black pistol.
Arthur stood right beside her, holding a tablet screen that was glowing brightly in the dark.
"You really think you can outsmart us?" Vanessa laughed cruelly, aiming the gun directly at my chest.
"I knew Andrew would break eventually, so I placed a hidden microphone on his tuxedo jacket."
She stepped off the patio and walked slowly toward us, her bridal innocence completely replaced by pure evil.
"I heard every single word of your little escape plan," Vanessa sneered.
Arthur tapped the screen of his tablet and smiled a wicked, triumphant smile.
"And just to make sure you don't get any heroic ideas," Arthur said smoothly.
He turned the tablet around so I could see the live video feed playing on the screen.
May you like
It was a hidden camera feed from inside my hotel room downtown.
The camera was pointed directly at Marcus, who was currently lying unconscious on the hotel floor in a massive pool of his own blood.
