Chapter 9 - The Final Choice

I rushed to the city hospital in the back of my father's armored SUV, my mind racing with terrifying possibilities.

If Ethan died with that flash drive, the stolen money would be permanently locked in a digital void.

If he lived, he had the ultimate leverage to escape the massive federal investigation surrounding his family.

I ran through the sliding glass doors of the emergency room, demanding to know Ethan's current medical status.

A tired surgeon met me in the hallway, wiping sweat from his brow and offering a small, reassuring nod.

He explained that the bullet had miraculously missed Ethan's heart by a fraction of an inch.

Ethan was currently awake, heavily medicated, and resting in the intensive care unit on the fourth floor.

I left my father in the waiting room and walked alone into Ethan's quiet, dimly lit hospital room.

He looked incredibly fragile, surrounded by beeping monitors and tangled in a web of clear plastic tubes.

He opened his tired eyes and offered me a weak, deeply apologetic smile when he saw me standing there.

"I am so sorry for everything, Lena," Ethan whispered, his voice incredibly raspy from the oxygen mask.

I walked closer to the bed, my expression remaining completely unreadable.

"I need the flash drive, Ethan," I said directly, refusing to engage in any emotional apologies.

Ethan slowly reached under his thin hospital pillow and pulled out the small, silver device.

He held it out to me without a single moment of hesitation or bargaining.

"I stole it because I knew it was the only way to prove to you that I had finally changed," Ethan confessed softly.

He explained that he wanted to hand it directly to me, ensuring my father could completely recover his stolen assets.

I took the cold metal drive from his trembling fingers, feeling a strange sense of final closure wash over me.

He had finally done the right thing, but it was far too late to repair the absolute destruction of our relationship.

"You are not strong enough for my world, Ethan, and I am far too strong for yours," I told him honestly.

I turned around and walked out of the hospital room, leaving my broken past behind me forever.

I handed the flash drive to the waiting FBI agents, securing the total financial ruin of the Blackwood empire.

My father placed his hand on my shoulder, looking at me with a profound sense of newfound respect.

"The federal government just officially seized the entire Blackwood construction company," my dad announced with a proud smile.

"And they are legally transferring total ownership of the company directly to you."
