Chapter 1 - The Illusion Shatters

Everything appeared absolutely perfect.
Until the clock struck 8:30 p.m.
At the center of the Starlight Hall stood Julian Cross, the billionaire architect of the evening. He was sipping a rare vintage of Dom Pérignon, surrounded by a circle of sycophants who laughed too loudly at his jokes. Julian was the king of venture capital, a man who had built his empire on the shattered remains of smaller companies.
Across the room, standing near the towering mahogany doors, was a woman who did not belong.
Her name was Clara Vance. She wore an elegant, backless emerald gown that blended seamlessly with the elite crowd, but her eyes were cold, scanning the room with the precision of a sniper. Ten years ago, Julian Cross had orchestrated a hostile takeover that drove her father to bankruptcy and an early grave.
Tonight, Clara was here to collect the debt.
Without warning, the jazz trio’s music was abruptly cut off by a piercing screech of microphone feedback. The guests winced, clutching their crystal glasses.
Then came the sound. Clang. Clang. Clang.
Thick, reinforced steel shutters violently descended over the massive floor-to-ceiling windows. The mahogany doors slammed shut, and a heavy magnetic lock engaged with a terrifyingly final click.
The soft golden light of the chandeliers flickered, then shifted to a harsh, blinding white. The ambient warmth of the room vanished, replaced by an icy, sterile glow.
"What is the meaning of this?" a district senator demanded, spilling champagne on his tuxedo. "Security! Open the doors!"
"Security is no longer in the building, Senator," a calm, feminine voice echoed through the hidden surround-sound speakers.

Every head in the room turned toward the balcony. Clara Vance stood where the jazz trio had been, a sleek tablet in one hand and a microphone in the other.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Clara announced, her voice dripping with lethal composure. "Welcome to the real foundation dinner. The doors are locked. The cell service is jammed. And you are all going to pay for your sins."
