Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

The gunshot echoed like a cannon blast in the confined basement.
Time seemed to slow down into a horrifying crawl.
I felt the concussive force of the bullet pass mere inches from my face.
It missed me completely.
The bullet struck the oak table behind me, sending wood splinters flying into the air.
Federal agents instantly pivoted, raising their rifles toward the shadows.
Three distinct shots rang out in rapid succession.
Diane was thrown backward by the impact, her revolver slipping from her grasp.
She collapsed against the concrete wall, clutching her bleeding shoulder.
She slid down to the floor, her breathing ragged, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.
The lead agent kicked her weapon away and quickly applied pressure to her wound.
Paramedics were immediately called down to secure the scene.
My father watched his wife bleed out on the floor with complete indifference.
He didn't shed a tear or offer a single word of comfort.
He only complained to the agents that his handcuffs were too tight.
Megan kept screaming that she was a victim, claiming our dad had forced her into the scheme.
Nobody listened to her lies anymore.
Daniel held me tightly against his chest, shielding my eyes from the carnage.
He whispered over and over again that it was finally over.
We were escorted up the stairs and out of the massive house.
The cool night air hit my face, and I took a deep, shuddering breath.
Dozens of police cruisers and black tactical vehicles were parked across the estate's sprawling lawn.
An agent informed us that local police had already secured our home.
Greg had been arrested in our driveway before he even got out of his car.
Our neighbor had locked the doors, and Lily had slept peacefully through the entire ordeal.
I looked back at the grand house my grandmother had left me.
It was no longer a symbol of family betrayal or toxic greed.
It was a fortress that had withstood the worst of them.
The FBI director approached us, offering a grim nod of respect to Daniel for his bravery.
He assured us that the evidence collected in the basement would guarantee life sentences for Vance, Greg, and my father.
Diane and Megan would face decades behind bars for conspiracy and attempted murder.
We climbed into the back of an ambulance to be checked for shock and minor injuries.
I held Daniel's hand, feeling a profound sense of peace settling over my heart.

The toxic anchors of my past had finally been cut loose.
We were free to build our own life on our own terms.
