Chapter 8 - The Raid

The flashbangs detonated with an earth-shattering roar.
Blinding white light filled the basement, accompanied by a deafening, high-pitched ringing.
Daniel grabbed me by the shoulders and tackled me violently to the floor.
We huddled under the heavy oak table just as total chaos erupted above us.
Gunfire echoed through the confined space, deafening and terrifying.
I squeezed my eyes shut, pressing my hands over my ears.
I heard heavy boots thundering down the basement stairs.
Men in tactical gear screamed commands, demanding everyone drop their weapons.
Through the ringing in my ears, I heard Megan screaming hysterically.
I opened my eyes and peered through the legs of the wooden chairs.
Federal agents swarmed the room, their weapons trained on my family.
Vance was lying on the floor, bleeding from a gunshot wound to his leg.
My dad was pinned against the concrete wall, a federal agent cuffing his hands tightly behind his back.
Megan had dropped the shotgun and was sobbing uncontrollably on her knees.
Daniel pulled me out from under the table, keeping his body positioned between me and the chaos.
I looked at him in total shock, realizing what he had done.
Daniel confessed that he hadn't just filed an online report when he suspected identity theft months ago.
He had actually been working with a federal task force investigating Vance's larger organized crime syndicate.
Daniel knew the family was involved, but he didn't know how deep the rot went.
He had planted a tiny, silent panic button in his jacket pocket before we left for the Christmas dinner.
He pressed it the moment Vance threw the tablet onto our lawn.
The FBI had been tracking our movements the entire night.
I felt a massive wave of relief wash over me.
My daughter was safe, the estate was secure, and the people who tried to destroy us were in handcuffs.
I looked around the room, trying to find my mother amidst the swarm of agents.
Diane wasn't on the floor.
She was standing near the shattered basement window, holding the silver revolver.
She had managed to avoid the initial blast and was hidden in the shadows.
Her eyes were completely wild, filled with unhinged desperation.
She raised the revolver, aiming it directly at my back.

Daniel screamed my name and lunged forward to push me out of the way.
Diane pulled the trigger.
