Chapter 5 - The Mastermind

I stumbled backward into the mud, my hand covering my mouth to stifle a scream.

Daniel caught my arm, his eyes wide with shock as he looked through the window.

My father wasn't a hostage at all.

The bruised face, the blood, the restraints in the video—it was all completely staged.

He was working with Vance.

I felt the entire foundation of my life crumble beneath my feet.

The man who had secretly called me, begging me not to sign the papers, was the architect of this hell.

Daniel pulled me away from the window and into the shadow of the tall trees.

He whispered that my dad must have orchestrated the entire forgery with Greg.

They needed the millions of dollars locked inside the estate.

But my grandmother had bypassed all of them and left the property solely to me.

They knew I would never sell the family home to clear their illicit debts.

So, they faked the kidnapping to force me to sign the quitclaim deed under duress.

Even the terrible fight at Christmas dinner made sickening sense now.

Diane's cruel behavior was designed to isolate me and push me out of the family circle.

They wanted to break me down emotionally before applying the final threat.

I asked Daniel if Diane knew the kidnapping was fake.

Daniel shook his head and said Diane was probably a victim of their manipulation, too.

She had forged the signature to save her husband, truly believing he was in danger.

Rage, hot and blinding, replaced the fear in my chest.

I refused to let them steal my grandmother's legacy and destroy my life.

I told Daniel we were going to the local police precinct to expose the entire fraud.

We had the forged document, and we had witnessed them together.

We turned around to run back to the truck.

Suddenly, a blinding spotlight clicked on from the roof of the estate, bathing us in harsh white light.

The heavy wooden front door swung open.

Megan stood on the porch, holding a sleek, black shotgun pointed directly at us.

She didn't look like the annoying younger sister who had complained about spilled juice.

Her eyes were cold, calculating, and completely void of any familial love.

She smiled and ordered us to walk inside the house very slowly.

As we walked up the porch steps, I noticed a second vehicle parked hidden behind the garage.

It was Diane's car.
