Chapter 9 - The Preemptive Strike

I did not sit down and cry after Mark walked out the door with his pathetic blackmail threat.
I immediately drove to my corporate office building, absolutely determined to beat him to the punch.
I walked straight into my CEO's corner office and placed my personal laptop directly on his desk.
I completely confessed to everything, explaining that my ex-fiancé had breached my home network and stolen client data to blackmail me.
My boss, a ruthless but fair man, appreciated my absolute honesty and immediate transparency.
He called the corporate legal team, who instantly filed a massive cybersecurity lawsuit and a restraining order against Mark.
Mark's blackmail leverage was completely neutralized before he even made it to his car.
With my career perfectly secured, I authorized my lawyer, Mr. Vance, to unleash total hell on my family.
We filed massive civil and criminal lawsuits against my parents for wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny.
Three days later, my family realized they were completely cornered by the overwhelming mountain of legal evidence.
Instead of hiring lawyers, they foolishly decided to stage a massive public intervention at my workplace.
My mother, father, Steven, and a newly bailed-out Bobby marched into my office lobby demanding to see me.
I walked out to the reception area, flanked by building security, to face their pathetic final stand.
"You are destroying this family over a simple misunderstanding, Kinsley!" my mother screamed for all my coworkers to hear.
"You are all completely dead to me," I replied, feeling absolutely no emotion toward any of them.
My father raised his hand, stepping forward aggressively to physically intimidate me in front of my colleagues.
Before he could even cross the lobby, the heavy glass doors of the office building swung open.
Six uniformed police officers and two plainclothes detectives marched directly into the reception area.
My mother smiled triumphantly, pointing a manicured finger directly at my chest.
"Arrest her, officers, she is trying to steal our family cabin and ruin our lives!" my mother demanded.

The lead detective completely ignored me, walked straight past my father, and pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
"We are not here for Kinsley," the detective announced in a loud, commanding voice.
