Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I stared at the security footage, my entire world completely shattering into a million jagged pieces.
Mark was the only person who had comforted me when I came home from that terrible holiday lunch.
He had held me, kissed my forehead, and told me I was incredibly brave for cutting my family off.
I realized with sickening clarity that his support was nothing but a calculated, manipulative lie.
I thanked the bank manager, secured my remaining insurance funds, and drove straight back to my apartment.
Mark was sitting at my kitchen island, calmly typing on his laptop as if he hadn't just stolen my secret inheritance.
"Hey babe, how was the lawyer's office?" he asked, not even looking up from his screen.
I walked over to the kitchen counter and slammed the printed still-frame from the bank security camera right next to his hand.
Mark froze, his eyes widening in pure panic as he stared at the photographic evidence of his massive theft.
"My parents paid you to keep me docile and paying their bills, didn't they?" I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.
Mark pushed his chair back, realizing his perfect little scam was completely exposed.
"They promised me a fifty percent cut of the trust fund if I made sure you never checked your credit history," Mark confessed shamelessly.
"Pack your things and get out of my apartment before I have you arrested for grand larceny," I ordered him.
Mark scoffed, completely dropping his loving boyfriend persona to reveal the vicious snake underneath.
"You really think you can just kick me out and walk away clean?" he sneered aggressively.
He pulled a small, black USB drive from his pocket and held it up with a malicious grin.
"I copied all of your company's proprietary client data from your home office computer last night," he revealed.
He threatened to send the stolen corporate secrets to my boss, framing me for corporate espionage and ruining my career forever.
"If you call the police about the trust fund, you will be spending the next ten years in federal prison alongside me," Mark threatened.

He walked out of the front door, leaving me completely alone and seemingly trapped by his brilliant blackmail.
But Mark had forgotten that I spent my entire life fixing complicated messes created by stupid, arrogant men.
