Chapter 8 - The Corrupt Official

I froze in the doorway, staring down the barrel of the small black pistol held by the CPS agent.

Claire gasped and tightened her grip on my hand, completely confused by the sudden turn of events.

"Agent Harris, what are you doing?" I asked, my voice remaining remarkably steady despite the adrenaline pumping through me.

Harris smiled, but it was a cold, calculating expression completely devoid of any human empathy.

"Vanessa wasn't the only one getting a cut of the insurance money, Daniel," the corrupt agent confessed.

She explained that she had fabricated the entire abuse investigation to forcefully remove my children from the house.

She was working with the cartel to isolate me, ensuring I would be entirely vulnerable to Vanessa's deadly trap.

"The kids are not at a foster home, they are locked inside my personal vehicle right now," Harris stated.

I felt a blinding flash of pure rage ignite inside my chest, burning hotter than anything I had ever felt.

"If you have hurt one single hair on their heads, I will kill you myself," I promised her quietly.

Harris scoffed and took a step closer, waving the small pistol toward the dark alleyway.

"You are in no position to make threats, you are going to walk to my car and get inside quietly."

I slowly raised my hands in surrender, carefully calculating the distance between her weapon and my body.

As we walked down the dark alley, I noticed a discarded glass bottle resting on top of a nearby dumpster.

I intentionally stumbled over a loose brick, falling hard onto the filthy pavement to create a sudden distraction.

Harris cursed and leaned forward to grab my shirt, completely lowering her guard for a fraction of a second.

I grabbed the heavy glass bottle and swung it wildly upward, smashing it directly into her wrist.

The pistol fired a stray bullet into the brick wall before clattering loudly onto the wet asphalt.

I lunged forward and tackled the corrupt agent, pinning her aggressively against the side of the metal dumpster.

Claire rushed over, snatched the dropped pistol from the ground, and aimed it firmly at Harris.

"Where is your car?" Claire demanded, her voice echoing with the fierce protective fury of a mother.

Harris groaned in pain and pointed a trembling finger toward a gray sedan parked at the end of the street.

I ripped a zip-tie from the agent's utility belt and tightly bound her hands securely behind her back.

I sprinted down the street toward the gray sedan, my heart practically beating out of my chest.

I peered through the tinted windows and saw Lily and Owen huddled together in the backseat, crying softly.

I grabbed a heavy rock and smashed the driver's side window, unlocking the doors and pulling them into my arms.

We were finally reunited, completely safe and free from the immediate danger that had surrounded us.

Just as I hugged my kids tightly, my phone rang with a call from Detective Miller at the local precinct.
