Chapter 2 - The Ambush

I stared at Marcus, feeling a rush of cold anger flood my veins.

He looked older than the last time I saw him, with dark circles under his eyes and a ragged beard.

"You have absolutely no right to be here," I told him, stepping onto the porch to block the doorway.

Marcus simply chuckled and tapped the thick manila envelope against his leg.

"Actually, Daniel, I have every legal right in the world to stand on this property."

He tossed the envelope onto the welcome mat and took a slow step backward.

"Vanessa told me you were getting too comfortable playing the role of daddy."

I realized in that terrifying moment that Vanessa had orchestrated this entire confrontation.

She knew I would eventually expose her theft, so she brought Marcus back into town as her ultimate weapon.

"Leave right now before I call the police," I warned him, clenching my fists at my sides.

Marcus smirked and walked down the driveway toward a rusty black sedan parked at the curb.

"Call them, Daniel, because they are going to want to read those documents anyway."

He climbed into his car and sped off down the suburban street, leaving behind a cloud of gray exhaust.

I bent down and picked up the envelope, my hands trembling slightly as I tore it open.

Inside was a petition to completely revoke my legal adoption of Lily and Owen.

The paperwork claimed that the original judge had been bribed to ignore Marcus's parental rights.

I walked back into the house just as Claire hurried into the hallway to find me.

"Who was at the door?" she asked, her voice still shaking from the confrontation in the backyard.

I handed her the legal documents, watching as her eyes scanned the formal accusations.

Claire collapsed against the hallway wall, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

"It is true, Daniel, I paid a private mediator under the table to fast-track the paperwork," she confessed.

I felt the ground shift beneath my feet as I realized my entire family was built on a legal vulnerability.

"Why didn't you tell me this?" I asked, struggling to keep my voice steady.

Before she could answer, heavy, authoritative knocks pounded against our front door.

I opened it to find two uniformed police officers and a stern woman holding a clipboard.

"Mr. Daniel Thomas?" the woman asked, flashing a badge from Child Protective Services.

"Yes, that is me," I replied, feeling a cold dread settle in my stomach.

She looked past me at Claire and stepped into the entryway without waiting for an invitation.

"We received an emergency tip regarding physical abuse, and we have an order to remove the children immediately."
