Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

The echoing sound of the gunshot slowly faded, leaving a heavy silence in the dusty warehouse.

Marcus collapsed onto the dirty concrete floor, groaning in absolute agony as blood pooled around his leg.

I did not waste a single second trying to understand why Vanessa had just shot her own partner.

I sprinted across the clearing and desperately untied the thick ropes binding Claire to the chair.

She ripped the gag from her mouth and buried her face into my chest, sobbing uncontrollably.

"We need to leave right now," I whispered, shielding her body with my own as I looked up at the catwalk.

Vanessa slowly descended the rusted metal stairs, keeping the hunting rifle firmly pressed against her shoulder.

"Nobody is leaving until I get what I want," she declared, aiming the weapon directly at my face.

Marcus coughed up blood and glared at Vanessa with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You crazy witch, you promised the cartel we would split the money," Marcus gasped out.

Vanessa laughed a cold, hollow laugh that sent shivers down my spine.

"The cartel doesn't care about you, Marcus, they only care about the two million dollar life insurance policy."

She looked at me with dead, emotionless eyes, completely detached from the reality of her actions.

"If Daniel dies here defending his wife from a crazed ex-husband, the insurance pays out double."

It was the perfect, twisted narrative she had crafted to completely clear her massive gambling debts.

"You will never get away with this," Claire screamed at her sister, stepping in front of me bravely.

Vanessa merely shrugged and tightened her finger on the trigger of the heavy rifle.

"The police are already looking for Marcus for kidnapping, so they will assume it was a murder-suicide."

She raised the barrel of the gun, fully prepared to execute her own sister for a paycheck.

I grabbed a handful of loose sawdust and rocks from the floor and violently threw it into her eyes.

Vanessa shrieked in pain and fired the rifle blindly, the bullet shattering the concrete just inches from my foot.

I lunged forward and tackled her to the ground, aggressively wrestling for control of the long barrel.

She kicked and scratched like a wild animal, her desperate strength fueled by pure panic.

I managed to wrench the rifle from her grip and tossed it far out of her reach into the darkness.

Just as I pinned her arms to the floor, the massive metal loading doors of the warehouse suddenly groaned open.

Four heavily armed cartel enforcers walked into the building, carrying automatic weapons leveled at us.

The leader of the group, a massive man with a scarred face, looked down at Vanessa with total disgust.

"You have made a huge mess, Vanessa, and our boss is extremely disappointed in your performance."
