Chapter 7 - The Enemy of My Enemy

The cartel leader cocked his automatic rifle, the metallic clack echoing ominously in the massive warehouse.

Vanessa scrambled backward across the dusty floor, completely terrified of the men she owed her life to.

"I have the money, I just need five more minutes to finish the job!" she pleaded desperately.

The scarred man shook his head slowly, a cruel smile forming on his weathered face.

"Your time ran out an hour ago, Vanessa, and now we are here to collect the debt in blood."

He raised his weapon, entirely prepared to gun down everyone standing in the room to leave no witnesses.

I knew I could not outrun automatic gunfire, and I refused to let Claire die in this filthy abandoned building.

"Wait!" I shouted, stepping directly between the cartel enforcers and my terrified wife.

The leader paused, raising an eyebrow at my sudden outburst of foolish bravery.

"I know exactly where Marcus hid the five hundred thousand dollars he stole from his previous scam."

Marcus, still bleeding profusely on the floor, looked up at me in absolute shock and panic.

"He is lying, I don't have any money!" Marcus screamed, desperately trying to drag himself away.

I pointed directly at Marcus and continued my bluff with total, unwavering conviction.

"He told me it was buried under the floorboards of his old cabin out by the lake."

The cartel leader looked at Marcus, his eyes narrowing as he calculated the potential profit.

"Is this true?" the scarred man asked, pressing the barrel of his rifle against Marcus's wounded leg.

Marcus shrieked in pain and nodded wildly, completely willing to agree to anything to stay alive.

"Yes, yes, it is all there, just let me live and I will take you to it!" Marcus cried out.

The leader signaled to his men, who violently dragged Marcus to his feet and carried him toward their vehicles.

"If the money isn't there, we will come back and burn your entire house down," the leader warned me.

They turned their backs and walked out of the warehouse, completely ignoring Vanessa as she cowered in the dirt.

As soon as the loading doors slammed shut, I grabbed Claire's hand and pulled her toward the rear exit.

Vanessa stood up, her face covered in dirt and tears, and tried to follow us out.

"Daniel, please, you have to help me, they will kill me if I stay in this city," she begged.

I stopped and looked at the woman who had tried to destroy my family and end my life.

"You are going to walk to the police station and confess to everything, or I will call the cartel myself."

Vanessa fell to her knees and sobbed, entirely broken by the absolute failure of her master plan.

I kicked the rear exit door open, ready to finally take my wife home.

But standing in the alleyway was Agent Harris from CPS, holding a small pistol aimed directly at my chest.
