Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Richard didn't run. He was too arrogant. Instead, he decided to eliminate the problem. He somehow tracked the IP ping back to a proxy server located near our safe house. Assuming it was just Sarah and me, he sent his "fixers"—three heavily armed union enforcers to silence us before the custody hearing.
It was 2:00 AM when the perimeter alarms silently flashed red on my monitor.
I told Sarah to take Leo into the reinforced panic room in the basement and lock the steel door. I didn't wait for Agent Miller's detail to respond. This was personal.
I slipped into the shadows of the kitchen, pulling my old service weapon—a customized SIG Sauer P226—from its lockbox. I threaded the suppressor onto the barrel.
The glass of the back door shattered. Three men stepped into the dark house, sweeping the room with flashlights.
"Find the old lady and the kid," one of them whispered. "Make it look like a home invasion."
I stepped out from behind the refrigerator. I didn't speak. I raised my weapon and fired three times in rapid succession. Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.
I didn't shoot to kill. I shot to cripple. Three bullets shattered three kneecaps.
The men collapsed to the floor, screaming in agony, dropping their weapons. I kicked their guns away and turned on the kitchen lights. I stood over them, pouring myself a glass of water.

"You boys have a choice," I said calmly, sipping the water. "You can bleed out on this linoleum, or you can tell the FBI exactly who sent you to murder a federal agent. Choose quickly. I don't want to stain the grout."
By the time the backup team arrived, I had three signed confessions implicating Richard Stone in attempted murder.
