Chapter 1 - The Breach

The smug grins on Richard and Mark’s faces didn’t last long. Sixty seconds after I ended the call, the heavy oak front door of Sarah’s suburban home didn’t just open—it was violently breached. The deafening CRACK of a battering ram shattered the frame, sending splinters flying across the entryway hardwood.

Richard’s laughter died in his throat as six men in full tactical gear poured into the dining room. They didn't wear standard police blue; they wore the matte black of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Hostage Rescue Team. Laser sights danced across the room, settling squarely on Richard’s chest and Mark’s forehead.

“Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands in the air!” the lead operator bellowed, his voice rattling the china in the cabinets.

Helen dropped her martini glass. It shattered, splashing gin across her expensive designer shoes. She let out a piercing shriek.

Richard, fueled by years of unchecked aggression, made the worst mistake of his life. He lunged toward the lead agent, his fists balled. "What the hell is this?! You can't barge into my—"

He didn't finish the sentence. The agent sidestepped Richard’s clumsy swing, drove the butt of his tactical rifle into the back of Richard’s knees, and slammed the 250-pound man face-first into the floor. The thud shook the floorboards—a satisfying echo of what he had done to my grandson minutes prior.

Mark finally released his death grip on Sarah’s thigh. He threw his hands up, his face drained of all color, whimpering like a cornered rat. "I didn't do anything! We're just having dinner!"

A tall man in a dark suit walked through the shattered doorframe, flashing a gold badge. He bypassed the chaos and walked straight to me.

"Director Price," Agent Miller said, his tone laced with deep respect. "We caught the signal from your emergency transponder. Are you and the child secure?"

I picked Leo up from the floor, cradling his trembling body against my chest. "We are secure, Miller. Arrest the grandfather for felony assault on a minor. Arrest the husband for domestic coercion and accessory. I want them processed in federal holding, not the local precinct. The local cops are on Richard Stone’s payroll."

Sarah stared at me, her eyes wide with absolute shock. "Mom? Director?"

I looked at the men who had terrorized my family, now handcuffed and groveling on the floor. "I’ll explain everything, sweetheart. But right now, we are leaving."
