Chapter 8 - The Vault

Serena aimed the heavy shotgun directly at my chest.
Her hands were completely steady, showing absolutely no hesitation or remorse.
"You always ruined everything, Clara," she spat bitterly.
"You are going to spend the rest of your life in federal prison," I replied, refusing to back down.
Serena laughed maliciously and cocked the heavy weapon.
"I am going to bury both of you in the foundation of the new guest house."
Suddenly, a loud, mechanical alarm began blaring throughout the entire mansion.
Flashing red emergency lights bathed the living room in a terrifying, crimson glow.
Serena looked around in absolute panic, momentarily distracted from her murderous intent.
Dad smiled for the first time since this entire nightmare began.
"Did you really think I didn't plan for this, Serena?" he asked calmly.
He revealed that the chair he was tied to was sitting directly on a hidden pressure plate.
When Serena had stepped back in shock, she accidentally triggered the estate's lockdown protocol.
Heavy steel security shutters violently slammed down over every single door and window in the house.
We were entirely trapped inside a massive, impenetrable steel box.
Serena wildly aimed the shotgun back at my father.
"Turn it off right now!" she screamed hysterically.
"I can't turn it off, Serena," Dad replied with a dangerous glint in his eye.
"The lockdown protocol also automatically alerts the FBI and the cartel simultaneously."
Serena's face completely drained of all color.
She knew the cartel hitmen were highly trained and incredibly ruthless.
A deafening explosion rocked the front of the mansion as the cartel forcefully breached the steel doors.
The sounds of heavy boots and automatic weapons echoed through the grand foyer.
Serena dropped the shotgun in absolute terror and scrambled desperately toward the basement door.
I grabbed a sharp piece of broken glass from the floor and quickly sliced through my father's ropes.

"We have to get to the panic room right now," Dad whispered urgently.
We ran down the long hallway just as the heavily armed cartel mercenaries burst into the living room.
