Chapter 8 - The Breach

Thick, choking white smoke instantly filled the cavernous warehouse.

Vance’s mercenaries shouted in confusion, coughing violently as the tear gas burned their lungs.

I immediately dropped to the floor, rolling beneath the heavy wooden table where my mother was tied.

Gunfire erupted blindly in the darkness as the mercenaries panicked.

I used a jagged piece of scrap metal I had hidden in my sleeve to saw through my mother's restraints.

The heavy metal doors of the warehouse blew open with a deafening explosion.

Dozens of FBI tactical agents flooded the room, their laser sights piercing the thick smoke.

They moved with lethal precision, disarming Vance’s blinded contractors one by one.

I pulled my mother to the ground, shielding her body with my own as the chaos raged around us.

Through the haze, I saw Ryan crawling toward the back exit, abandoning Vance completely.

I grabbed a discarded rifle from an unconscious mercenary and sprinted after him.

I tackled Ryan just as he reached the rusted metal door leading to the pier.

We crashed onto the wet wooden docks, the cold ocean wind whipping around us.

Ryan scrambled to his feet, pulling a small hidden knife from his belt.

He lunged at me, slashing wildly at my face and neck.

I sidestepped his clumsy attack, grabbed his extended arm, and twisted it sharply.

The bone snapped with a sickening pop, and Ryan screamed in agony.

I kicked the back of his knee, forcing him to the ground, and pressed the barrel of the rifle to the back of his head.

He sobbed uncontrollably, begging me to remember the fifteen years we had spent together.

I told him I would never forget a single second of it.

I kept him pinned to the ground until three FBI agents rushed out onto the pier and placed him in heavy steel handcuffs.

As they dragged him away, a massive explosion rocked the far side of the warehouse.

General Vance had just detonated a suicide vest, choosing death over a federal prison cell.
