Chapter 7 - The Bluff

The barrel of the rifle was inches from my forehead.

Vance’s finger tightened on the trigger, his eyes wide with absolute fury.

I did not blink, holding his gaze with the cold discipline of a combat veteran.

I told him that executing me would not bring the thirty-five million dollars back.

I lied and said the Treasury transfer was sitting in a temporary escrow account that required my dual-factor authentication to finalize.

If I died, the funds would permanently lock, and the Pentagon would be alerted to the discrepancy within an hour.

Vance hesitated, the greed in his heart warring with his desire for revenge.

Ryan panicked, screaming at Vance that I was lying and just buying time.

Ryan raised his suppressed pistol and aimed it at my mother's chest.

He shouted that if I didn't cancel the transfer, he would shoot her right now.

My mother looked at Ryan and spat directly on his expensive leather shoes.

She told him he was a pathetic coward who hid behind a baseball bat and a fake smile.

Ryan’s face twisted in rage, and he stepped closer to strike her.

I screamed at him to stop, promising to give them the authentication code.

Vance immediately ordered Ryan to stand down, realizing my mother was the ultimate leverage.

Vance handed me his secure tablet and a specialized stylus.

I deliberately typed the numbers slowly, letting the seconds tick away.

I needed exactly three minutes for my backup plan to arrive.

When I was in the maintenance truck, I hadn't just called the hospital.

I had also sent a heavily encrypted SOS signal to the FBI's internal corruption task force, bypassing the military chain of command.

Vance snatched the tablet from my hands as the progress bar hit ninety-nine percent.

He smiled, believing he had just secured his fortune again.

The progress bar reached one hundred percent, and the screen flashed bright green.

But the text on the screen did not say "Transfer Complete."

The text on the screen said, "Target Lock Acquired."

The reinforced glass roof of the warehouse shattered as three tear gas canisters dropped directly onto the concrete floor.
