Chapter 5 - The Bloody Deal

I pulled the tape off the sergeant's mouth, keeping my gun aimed directly at his chest.

He gasped for air, coughing up a mixture of blood and saliva.

I demanded to know where my mother was and why he was in the trunk.

He begged for an ambulance, swearing he would tell me everything if I saved him.

I pressed the barrel of my gun against his wounded shoulder.

He screamed in agony and quickly started talking.

He confessed that Ryan had been paying him for years to cover up domestic disturbance calls.

Tonight, Ryan had offered him half a million dollars to orchestrate my mother's quiet discharge from the hospital.

But as soon as the job was done, Ryan shot him and locked him in the trunk to tie up loose ends.

I asked him where Ryan had taken my mother.

Christopher pointed toward a massive, decaying warehouse at the edge of the pier.

He said Ryan was waiting for a private extraction team hired by a corrupt general.

I grabbed a medical tourniquet from my bag, tossed it to him, and slammed the trunk shut.

I sprinted toward the warehouse, using the rusting machinery as cover.

The massive metal doors were slightly open, revealing a cavernous, dark interior.

I slipped inside, letting my eyes adjust to the deep shadows.

In the center of the room, my mother was tied to a wooden chair, looking exhausted but alive.

Ryan was pacing back and forth, holding a suppressed pistol and a ringing cell phone.

He answered the phone, yelling angrily at the person on the other end.

He screamed that he wanted his money now, or he would leave the old woman alive to testify.

I raised my weapon, lining up the iron sights perfectly with the back of Ryan's head.

Before I could pull the trigger, the warehouse was suddenly bathed in blinding white light.

Dozens of red laser sights painted my chest in a terrifying grid.

General Vance's voice echoed through a megaphone, telling me to drop the weapon.
