Chapter 6 - The Assassin's Web

I stared at Mia, the overwhelming realization of her true identity hitting me like a physical blow to the chest.

The woman who had destroyed my marriage was not a random mistake; she was a calculated weapon deployed against me.

"You set up the affair so Claire would leave me and run directly into your sister's arms," I deduced slowly.

Mia smiled triumphantly, crossing her legs and leaning back comfortably into the leather swivel chair.

"We needed Claire isolated from your heavily guarded empire so we could safely extract her and the child," Mia explained.

"Extract her for what?" Michael demanded, keeping his rifle trained perfectly steadily on the federal agent.

"To testify against you in federal court, Daniel," Mia answered, her voice dripping with absolute, undeniable confidence.

"Claire has been wearing a wire and copying your hard drives since the day you got married."

The words felt like shattered glass slicing directly through my heart.

Every loving moment, every shared secret, every whispered promise in the dark had been a carefully constructed federal operation.

"If you have the evidence, why haven't you arrested me yet?" I asked, fighting to keep my voice from shaking.

Mia’s confident smile instantly faded, replaced by a sudden, incredibly dark expression of genuine frustration.

"Because Claire went rogue three days ago and hijacked the entire operation for herself," Mia admitted bitterly.

Mia stood up, typing a rapid command into the keyboard on the metal console in front of her.

The massive wall of monitors shifted, displaying live feeds of a heavily fortified underground bunker somewhere in Chicago.

"She took the evidence, she took the stolen money, and she took my strike team hostage," Mia confessed angrily.

"She isn't working for the government anymore; she is planning to execute every single rival boss in the city tonight."

I watched the screens in absolute horror as the camera feeds showed bound and gagged cartel leaders in a dark basement.

Claire was walking among them, heavily pregnant, holding a suppressed pistol with terrifying, chilling calmness.

She was going to wipe out the entire Chicago underworld to ensure no one would ever threaten our daughter again.

"She is going to start a massive gang war that will burn the entire city to the ground," Michael whispered in shock.

Suddenly, a loud, heavy mechanical clicking sound echoed rapidly from beneath the metal floorboards of the command room.

"That is why she left the front doors open for you," Mia said, her eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror.

"She knew I was here, and she just armed the C-4 charges rigged directly beneath this room."
