Chapter 4 - The Sister's Revenge

I stared at the security monitor, completely unable to reconcile the image of my gentle wife with this ruthless killer.

Claire was moving with the cold, calculated precision of a highly trained military operative.

"She played us all, Daniel," Elias whispered, his voice fading rapidly as his lungs filled with fluid.

"She needed the ghost accounts to fund her real objective, and I was just the final obstacle," he coughed violently.

Before I could demand more answers, Elias's eyes went blank, and his head slumped forward lifelessly onto the keyboard.

I stepped back, my mind spiraling as I desperately tried to connect the pieces of this terrifying puzzle.

"Boss, look at this," Michael called out from the other side of the massive, glowing server bank.

He was holding a printed banking ledger he had pulled from the emergency backup drive.

"Claire didn't transfer the money to an offshore account; she transferred it to a domestic shell company," Michael explained.

I ripped the paper from his hands, scanning the bold black ink for a name or a location.

The company was registered under the name of Rebecca Sterling, Claire’s supposedly innocent and timid older sister.

The same sister who had hung up on me when I called asking for my wife just a few weeks ago.

"Rebecca is the mastermind behind the shell company?" I asked, struggling to process the impossible betrayal.

"It gets worse," Michael said, pointing to the secondary routing numbers at the bottom of the page.

"The funds were used to purchase a decommissioned naval fortress on an isolated island in Lake Superior."

I realized Claire hadn't been kidnapped by anyone; she had orchestrated her own extraction to join forces with her sister.

They were building a heavily fortified compound, funded entirely by my stolen criminal empire.

"We are going to that island tonight," I declared, turning my back on the bloody carnage of the server room.

We raced to my private airfield, boarding the syndicate's sleek black helicopter just as the sun began to rise.

The flight over the dark, freezing waters of the lake was tense, completely consumed by an oppressive silence.

Through the window, I finally spotted the massive concrete fortress rising ominously out of the choppy, gray water.

As the pilot initiated our descent, a sudden, blinding flash of light erupted from the eastern guard tower.

A high-powered surface-to-air missile tore through the morning sky, rocketing directly toward our helicopter.
