Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

I stared at the closed mahogany door of the nursery, a cold dread pooling in my stomach.
For weeks, Claire had kept this room deadbolted, claiming she was preparing a surprise for the baby.
I always thought she was painting murals or assembling expensive cribs.
Now, with my wife missing and her phone disconnected, that locked door felt like a mocking threat.
I did not wait for my security chief to bring the master keys.
I took a step back and drove my heel directly into the heavy wood right next to the doorknob.
The frame splintered loudly, and the door swung open, revealing absolute darkness inside.
I reached for the wall switch and flooded the room with harsh overhead light.
There was no crib, no pastel paint, and no stuffed animals sitting in the corners.
Instead, the walls were entirely covered in high-resolution surveillance photographs connected by red string.
I stepped into the room, my breath catching in my throat as I recognized the faces in the pictures.
There were photos of my warehouses, my offshore bank accounts, and my most trusted lieutenants.
But the centerpiece of the wall was a massive board detailing the movements of the woman I had slept with.
Claire knew absolutely everything about the affair, down to the exact times I had entered and left the hotel.
She had not been decorating a nursery; she had been building a comprehensive case against my entire criminal empire.
My chest tightened as I realized the woman I thought was fragile had been meticulously dissecting my life.
I walked closer to the main board, noticing a small, black burner phone resting on a wooden desk.
Underneath the phone was a single piece of heavy cardstock with my name written in Claire’s elegant handwriting.
I picked up the card and read the short, chilling message.
It read, "You built a fortress to keep your enemies out, but you forgot to check who was already inside."
Suddenly, the black burner phone on the desk began to vibrate, shattering the suffocating silence of the room.
I stared at the glowing screen for a moment before answering the call and pressing the phone to my ear.
"It took you long enough to break down that door, Daniel," a deep, unfamiliar voice chuckled on the other end.
I gripped the phone so hard the plastic casing groaned under the pressure.
"Who is this, and where is my wife?" I demanded, my voice dangerously low.

The man laughed again, a dark, raspy sound that made my blood run instantly cold.
"Your wife is currently sitting across from me, and she is offering to sell us your entire syndicate for a very reasonable price."
