Chapter 5 - The Lockdown

My father let out a primal scream of rage and despair.

He had destroyed his entire family for absolutely nothing.

The police already had the evidence to put him away for the rest of his life.

Daniel used my father's moment of distraction to strike.

Daniel lunged through the darkness and tackled my father to the tile floor.

The two men violently wrestled for control of the stolen gun.

I grabbed my mother's hand and pulled her toward the heavy wooden door.

"We have to get out!" I cried.

My mother pushed the door open, and we tumbled into the brightly lit hospital corridor.

The entire floor was in a state of absolute chaos.

Nurses were screaming, and patients were scrambling for cover.

The emergency lockdown sirens were wailing at a deafening volume.

Red strobe lights flashed from the ceiling, casting eerie shadows on the walls.

A massive gunshot echoed from inside my hospital room.

My mother let out a terrified gasp, covering her mouth with her hands.

For a terrifying second, we did not know who had been shot.

Then Daniel stumbled out of the room, clutching his side.

Blood was seeping through his heavy work coat, but he was still standing.

"Run to the stairwell!" Daniel shouted, pushing us forward.

We sprinted down the long corridor, our footsteps echoing over the sirens.

We reached the heavy metal doors of the emergency stairwell and pushed them open.

Daniel locked the door behind us using a mop handle he found in the corner.

We started running down the concrete steps, hoping to reach the lobby.

But when we reached the third-floor landing, the door below us was kicked open.

Five men dressed in black tactical gear and wearing terrifying skull masks entered the stairwell.

They were carrying automatic weapons with laser sights.

The cartel had breached the hospital.

The leader of the group pointed his glowing red laser directly at my chest.

"Give us the girl, and the rest of you can walk away," the leader said.
