Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Six months had passed since the longest night of my life.

The world had quietly moved on, but our lives had changed forever.

Daniel survived his emergency surgery and spent weeks recovering in the safe house.

The police dismantled the local cartel branch using the digital ledger my brother had turned over.

Ethan was sent to a secure juvenile rehabilitation center, finally getting the psychological help he desperately needed.

Without Richard casting a dark shadow over our lives, my mother blossomed into a completely different person.

She smiled more, laughed louder, and finally looked at me with genuine love.

Daniel officially adopted me, legally changing my last name to Mercer.

For the first time, I had a father who actually wanted me.

We moved into a beautiful, quiet cabin near the mountains, far away from the town that held so many terrible memories.

I started at a new school, made real friends, and finally felt like a normal teenager.

The nightmare was completely over.

Our family was whole, safe, and deeply happy.

One crisp autumn morning, I was unpacking the last few boxes in my new bedroom.

I reached into the bottom of a cardboard box and pulled out my old winter jacket.

It was the same jacket I had worn on the night I was kicked out, cleaned and returned by the FBI.

I slid my hand into the deep pocket, feeling a strange piece of thick cardstock.

I pulled it out and found a pristine, unmarked black envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel shaking hands with the masked leader of the cartel mercenaries.

The handwritten note on the back simply read: "He is not who you think he is."
