Chapter 4 - The Sniper

My father instinctively turned his head toward the large hospital window.
A split second later, a high-caliber bullet shattered the thick glass.
The projectile missed my father's head by less than an inch, embedding itself into the wall.
The cartel had not sent an extraction team to save him.
They had sent a cleaner to eliminate every single witness in the room.
My father dropped to the floor in sheer terror, dragging my mother down with him.
Daniel leaped across the room and threw his body over mine to protect me from the flying shards of glass.
Another bullet ripped through the room, striking the main light switch.
The room was instantly plunged into complete darkness.
The only light came from the blinking monitors attached to my arms.
"We have to crawl into the hallway right now!" Daniel whispered urgently.
I ripped the IV lines out of my arms, ignoring the sharp sting of pain.
I slid out of the bed and dropped onto the cold, glass-covered floor.
My mother was sobbing silently a few feet away.
My father was hyperventilating, still clutching the stolen police weapon.
"If anyone moves, I will shoot you myself!" my father threatened blindly in the dark.
He was losing his mind, trapped between the sniper outside and the police outside the door.
Suddenly, a weak, raspy voice echoed from the corner of the room.
It was Ethan.
He had somehow regained a sliver of consciousness despite the poison in his veins.
"Dad," Ethan wheezed painfully.
My father crawled toward the sound of his favorite son.
"I am here, Ethan, just stay quiet," my father whispered.
Ethan let out a wet, rattling cough.
"I did not just steal the money, Dad," Ethan confessed in the darkness.
"What are you talking about?" my father asked.
"I found the digital ledger with all your cartel contacts," Ethan gasped.
May you like
My father let out a sound of pure panic.
"I gave the ledger to the police an hour before you came home," Ethan whispered.
