Chapter 3 - The True Criminal

My father laughed nervously, taking a step backward toward the exit.
"That is insane, I have never seen that powder in my life," he stammered.
My mother looked at the man she had been married to for over a decade.
Her eyes were wide with a horrifying realization.
"Richard, you were the one who handed her that jacket before you threw her out," my mother said.
The police officer immediately unclipped his radio.
"I need backup to room two-fourteen, we have an attempted murder suspect," the officer said.
But my father was faster than anyone expected.
He lunged forward and snatched the heavy metal fire extinguisher from the wall.
With a brutal swing, he struck the police officer across the side of the head.
The officer collapsed to the floor, completely unconscious.
My mother screamed and tried to run, but my father grabbed her by the hair.
He pulled her against his chest and ripped the unconscious officer's gun from its holster.
He pressed the barrel of the weapon directly against my mother's temple.
"Nobody makes a single move!" my father roared.
I pulled the hospital blankets up to my chin, shaking violently.
The man who had raised me was a monster.
Daniel kept his hands perfectly still, his eyes locked on the weapon.
"Let her go, Richard," Daniel said in a dangerously calm voice.
"You have no idea what you have stumbled into, dead man," my father sneered.
My father explained that the eight hundred dollars was not household money.
It was cash from a local cartel that he had been laundering for five years.
Ethan had found the hidden safe and stolen the money to buy a used car.
My father knew the cartel would kill his entire family if the money went missing.
He needed a scapegoat to take the blame, so he framed me.
"I laced the coat with a cartel toxin hoping she would die in the snow, leaving no witnesses," my father confessed.
He pulled a burner phone from his pocket and dialed a number with his free hand.
"The job went wrong, I need extraction right now," my father said into the phone.

The person on the other end of the line answered with a chilling, metallic voice.
"Look out the window, Richard."
