Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece of Deception

The green light on Vanessa's detonator blinked ominously in the dim cabin lighting.
Marcus immediately lowered his weapon, realizing that shooting her would trigger the explosive device.
I stared at the woman I had once foolishly called my best friend.
Her elegant facade was completely gone, replaced by the cold calculation of a true predator.
I demanded to know where Adrian had taken my sister.
Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed in the empty cabin.
She explained that Adrian was an absolute fool who thought he was the smartest man in every room.
He genuinely believed Vanessa loved him and wanted to run away to a tropical island with his stolen millions.
She revealed that Adrian had never been the true mastermind behind the offshore accounts.
He was just a greedy, arrogant front man placed there to take the fall if things went wrong.
Vanessa was the one actually pulling the strings, quietly moving billions of dollars for dangerous international cartels.
Adrian thought he was taking Lily to a secondary airfield as a clever backup plan.
He had no idea that Vanessa had given his pilot coordinates to a cartel extraction team instead.
Vanessa looked at me with genuine pity, calling me a smart girl who simply played the wrong game.
She explained that my elaborate public stunt at the cathedral was exactly what she needed.
With the FBI focused entirely on Adrian, she was free to disappear with all the untraceable crypto-keys.
She told me I had done all her dirty work by destroying his reputation and distracted the authorities.
I felt a wave of nausea wash over me as the full scope of her manipulation became clear.
Marcus slowly took a step forward, trying to close the distance between them.
Vanessa didn't even flinch; she simply rested her thumb lightly on the detonation button.
She informed Marcus that the explosives were wired directly to the jet's massive fuel tanks.
If he took one more step, she would vaporize the entire airfield.
I desperately wracked my brain, trying to remember any detail about the financial files I had stolen.
I realized Vanessa needed the master physical flash drive to access the final, largest cartel account.
She thought Adrian had it on him, but I had pickpocketed it from his tuxedo jacket moments before the ceremony began.
I reached into the bodice of my corset and pulled out the small, encrypted silver drive.
Vanessa's smug smile instantly vanished as her eyes locked onto the tiny device.
I held it up, telling her that if she blew the plane, the cartel's money would burn with us.
I offered her a simple trade: the flash drive for the exact location of my sister.
Vanessa hesitated, the greed in her eyes warring with her desire for absolute control.
She slowly nodded, pulling a piece of paper from her pocket and placing it on the table.
I walked forward cautiously, keeping my eyes locked on her trigger finger.
Just as I reached out to grab the paper, a deafening gunshot shattered the windows of the plane.

Vanessa gasped in shock, dropping the detonator as a dark red stain spread across her shoulder.
Adrian suddenly climbed through the emergency exit door, his tuxedo torn and his eyes completely deranged.
