Chapter 10 - The New Empire

Six months later, the morning sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my new corner office.
The heavy bronze plaque on the door proudly displayed my real, unhidden name: Managing Partner.
Adrian Blackwell was currently serving a fifty-year federal sentence without the possibility of parole.
The evidence I had collected systematically dismantled his entire corrupt empire piece by piece.
My father had also been indicted for his willing participation in the fraud and was awaiting trial in a county jail.
I felt absolutely no guilt as I watched the authorities seize his beloved country club memberships and luxury cars.
Lily was safely enrolled in a prestigious university overseas, completely shielded from the fallout of the scandal.
Marcus, the security chief who had saved my life, was now happily employed as the head of my firm's private investigative division.
He walked into my office carrying two cups of expensive, steaming coffee and a massive stack of new client files.
We had built a highly successful law firm dedicated exclusively to representing victims of financial abuse and corporate fraud.
Our reputation for ruthlessness against powerful, corrupt men had made us the most sought-after firm in the city.
I took a sip of the perfect coffee, looking out over the skyline that I used to view from behind Adrian's golden cage.
I was no longer a victim, a terrified fiancé, or a pawn in a billionaire's sick game.
I had reclaimed my life, my name, and my future with my own two hands.
I smiled at Marcus, thanking him for the coffee and telling him we had a long day of depositions ahead.
He nodded respectfully, placing the files on my desk before turning to leave the room.
Everything was finally perfect, peaceful, and exactly how it was supposed to be.
I reached out to grab the first file, ready to start destroying another corrupt empire.
But my hand stopped abruptly when I noticed a strange, unmarked black envelope resting beneath the stack of papers.
I slowly picked it up, my heart rate mysteriously spiking as I broke the wax seal.
Inside was a single, high-resolution photograph of my sister Lily, taken just yesterday outside her dorm room in London.

The familiar, elegant handwriting on the back of the photograph sent absolute ice through my veins.
"Did you really think Vanessa was acting alone, darling?"
