Chapter 2 - The Stolen Innocent

Panic gripped my throat like a vice as I frantically scanned the terrified faces in the crowd.

Lily was only nineteen years old and completely oblivious to the dangerous game I had been playing.

I pushed my way through the wealthy socialites who were now crying and demanding answers from the police.

Agent Miller grabbed my arm to steady me, asking what was wrong.

I shoved the handwritten note into his chest, unable to form the words through my hyperventilation.

He read it quickly and immediately barked new orders into his earpiece.

They needed to lock down every exit, but I knew it was already too late.

Adrian's private security team consisted of ex-military mercenaries who knew exactly how to extract a high-value target.

I sprinted toward the bridal suite, praying Lily had just run away to hide from the smoke.

The hallway was eerily quiet compared to the chaos echoing inside the main sanctuary.

The heavy wooden door to the suite was cracked open, swaying gently on its hinges.

I pushed it open and found the room completely trashed.

Chairs were overturned, and a shattered champagne flute covered the carpet in sharp glass.

Lying in the center of the room was Lily's pearl necklace, the one I had given her as a bridesmaid gift.

The clasp was violently broken, confirming my absolute worst fear.

Adrian had taken her to ensure my complete silence and cooperation.

Agent Miller stepped into the room behind me, his weapon drawn and his eyes scanning for threats.

He told me we needed to get to a safe house immediately because Adrian's men would definitely be looking for me.

I refused, telling him that going into hiding was exactly what Adrian wanted me to do.

I walked over to my bridal makeup vanity and ripped off the fake bottom of the top drawer.

Inside was a reinforced military-grade laptop that I had kept hidden for the last six months.

I booted it up, my fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced precision.

Agent Miller watched in shock as lines of code reflected in my eyes.

I explained that I had secretly planted a GPS tracker inside the lining of Adrian's favorite designer watch.

A red dot blinked onto the digital map, moving rapidly toward the city's private airfield.

He was planning to leave the country with my sister before the federal warrants could freeze his assets.

I told Agent Miller we had exactly twenty minutes before that jet was airborne.

We ran out to the alleyway and jumped into the back of an unmarked black SUV.

The sirens wailed as we sped through the busy downtown streets, running every red light.

I pulled up the banking dashboard I had created to monitor Adrian's secret accounts.

My plan was to drain his offshore funds remotely, leaving him without the money needed to pay off his mercenary pilot.

I initiated the transfer, holding my breath as the progress bar loaded on the screen.

Suddenly, a bright red error message flashed across my screen, accompanied by an aggressive warning siren.

Access denied.

Someone on the inside with top-tier administrative privileges had just locked me out of the system.

I stared at the user ID that had authorized the lockdown, my heart shattering into a million pieces.

The betrayal came from the only person I thought I could still trust in this world.
