Chapter 4 - The Iron Cage

The cold subterranean air grew instantly suffocating as the ventilation hum died out.
"Elena! Open this door!" Arthur roared, slamming his fists against the reinforced iron panel.
The only response through the intercom was Elena’s low, victorious chuckle followed by the sound of glass breaking upstairs.
"Leo!" Arthur cried, panic clawing at his chest like wild claws.
Marcus immediately unholstered his tactical knife, wedging the carbon-steel blade into the doorframe to inspect the latch.
"Save your breath, Arthur; this door is rated to withstand explosive charges," Marcus said, working rapidly.
"We have less than fifteen minutes before they get the boy off the estate."
Arthur grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from the maintenance locker in the corner of the cellar.
"There's an old masonry coal chute behind the eastern wine racks," Arthur remembered, his eyes wide with desperate energy.
"It leads directly out to the rose garden behind the conservatory."
Together, Arthur and Marcus hurled the antique mahogany wine racks aside, shattering dozens of vintage bottles against the stone floor.
Behind the splintered wood lay the rusted iron hatch of the nineteenth-century coal chute.
Arthur wedged the crowbar beneath the corroded iron latch and pulled with every ounce of strength in his body.
The iron groaned, sparked, and snapped open with a sharp metallic crack.
Marcus boosted Arthur up into the narrow brick shaft, which was slick with grime and cobwebs.
Arthur scrambled upward on his hands and knees, ignoring the jagged bricks tearing through his palms and knees.
He shoved open the exterior cast-iron grate, tumbling out into the freezing mud of the rose garden.
Heavy rain soaked through Arthur’s clothes in seconds as lightning ripped across the midnight sky.
From the front of the mansion came the roar of high-powered engines revving on the wet gravel.
Arthur sprinted through the pouring rain, rounding the corner of the conservatory toward the circular driveway.
A convoy of three black armored SUVs was already pulling away from the front entrance at high speed.
On the front porch, Maria lay motionless on the marble steps, blood pooling around her dark hair.
Arthur rushed to Maria’s side, falling to his knees and checking her pulse with shaking fingers.
Her pulse was weak, but steady.
Maria opened her eyes weakly, her lips trembling as she pointed toward the iron estate gates.
"Mr. Vance... they took him," Maria choked out, coughing in pain.
"They put Leo in the lead vehicle... but Elena didn't get in."
Arthur looked up toward the shadows of the estate gates, where a lone figure stood beneath a black umbrella.

Elena stood there holding a small remote detonator, watching him with cold, empty eyes.
"Goodbye, Arthur," Elena whispered, pressing the red trigger with her thumb.
