Chapter 1 - The Midnight Eviction

Arthur Vance stood in the center of the grand foyer, his silhouette cast long and menacing against the Italian marble.
Beside him, five-year-old Leo buried his tear-streaked face into Arthur's tailored trousers, trembling with pure terror.
Maria held her ground, clutching a thick stack of printed financial statements with white-knuckled fingers.
"Look at the ledger numbers, Mr. Vance," Maria urged, her voice breaking the heavy silence.
"Eighty million dollars was moved out of Leo's educational trust fund over the last seventy-two hours."
Elena laughed, tossing her glossy dark hair over her silk-draped shoulders with effortless disdain.
"You are going to take the word of a minimum-wage nanny over your own wife, Arthur?" Elena sneered.
"I needed immediate liquidity for my luxury fashion line in Milan, and that trust is joint marital property."
Arthur took one slow, deliberate step toward her, his jaw locked like forged steel.
"That trust was established by my late grandfather exclusively for my son," Arthur said in a voice that chilled the room.
"You forged my electronic authorization, Elena."
"You systematically robbed a defenseless five-year-old child."
Elena's arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by an ugly, venomous scowl.
"I gave up my youth to play mother to another woman's son in this soulless mausoleum!" Elena shouted.
"You cannot kick me out of this house, Arthur."
"My name is on the deed, and half of everything you own belongs to me by law."
Arthur pulled his phone from his breast pocket and hit a single key.
"Officer Jenkins, you may enter now," Arthur said coldly into the receiver.
The heavy front doors swung wide open, revealing four armed county sheriff deputies standing on the porch.
Elena recoiled, her designer handbag slipping from her fingers onto the floor.
"Pack one suitcase, Elena," Arthur commanded without a shred of pity.
"If your feet are still on my property in twenty minutes, you will leave in handcuffs."
Maria knelt down beside little Leo, wrapping him in a soft blanket and whispering comforting words.
"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Maria whispered, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.
Arthur looked down at his terrified child, his heart aching with protective fury.
"I will destroy anyone who threatens my son's future," Arthur vowed, looking straight into Elena's eyes.
"Even my own wife."
Elena turned toward the door under the watchful eyes of the deputies, but suddenly stopped on the threshold.
She slowly looked over her shoulder, a twisted, victorious smile spreading across her painted red lips.
Elena pulled a folded legal document from her coat pocket and held it up for Arthur to see.
"You think you're so clever, Arthur," Elena whispered in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Check your phone, darling; the family court granted me an emergency ex parte custody order ten minutes ago, and those deputies aren't here to remove me."
The lead deputy stepped past Elena, drawing a pair of steel handcuffs while looking directly at Arthur Vance.
