Chapter 2 - The Red Notice

The lead deputy placed his heavy hand on the butt of his sidearm.

"Arthur Vance, you are ordered to surrender the minor child immediately pursuant to court order 409," the deputy announced.

Arthur did not flinch, stepping directly between his son and the armed officers.

"That order is fraudulent, and you know it," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deadly register.

Maria quickly scooped Leo into her arms, backing away toward the grand staircase.

Elena leaned against the open doorway, checking her manicured nails with mocking amusement.

"The judge agreed that your erratic work schedule and violent outbursts make you an unfit guardian, Arthur," Elena purred.

"Hand over my son, or spend the night in county jail."

Suddenly, the side entrance of the foyer opened, and Marcus Cole strode into the room.

Marcus was Arthur’s longtime head of personal security, a towering former military intelligence officer with eyes like flint.

Marcus held up a tablet displaying a live video feed from the Massachusetts State Supreme Court.

"Deputy Miller, I suggest you call your precinct captain before you make a career-ending mistake," Marcus said calmly.

"Judge Harrison, the man whose signature is on that paper, was arrested twenty minutes ago by federal agents for accepting corporate bribes."

Deputy Miller froze, his eyes darting between Marcus's tablet and Elena's sudden expression of panic.

"The emergency custody order was officially vacated five minutes after it was entered," Marcus added, turning the screen toward the deputies.

Deputy Miller swallowed hard, taking a step back toward the front porch.

"We received no notification of a stay, sir," the deputy stammered, his authority completely evaporating.

"You have it now," Arthur barked.

"Now get off my property before I have the state attorney general revoke your badges."

The four deputies retreated quickly down the stone steps, leaving Elena completely stranded without her state-sponsored muscle.

Elena's aristocratic facade crumbled into raw, frantic panic.

"Arthur, please, let's talk about this privately," Elena pleaded, reaching out to touch his arm.

Arthur recoiled as if she were a venomous snake.

"Get out of my sight, Elena," Arthur whispered.

Elena turned and fled into the rainy night, her high heels clicking frantically down the driveway toward a waiting black sedan.

Maria let out a long, trembling breath, kissing the top of little Leo's curly hair.

"It's over, Mr. Vance," Maria said softly.

Arthur looked at Marcus, whose grim expression remained unchanged.

"It isn't over, Maria," Arthur replied, his instincts screaming that something was deeply wrong.

Marcus held up his satellite phone as a series of urgent financial alerts flashed across the screen in red text.

"Boss, Elena's departure was just a distraction," Marcus said grimly.

"While she had you cornered in the foyer, an automated program executed an emergency liquidation of Vance Energy shares from an offshore terminal in Grand Cayman."

Arthur’s phone buzzed with an emergency notification from his board of directors, declaring that his voting shares had fallen below fifty percent.
