Chapter 5 - The Silent Intruder

I killed the beam of my tactical flashlight and pressed my back tightly against the cold concrete wall.

The intruder slowly descended the wooden stairs, each step groaning loudly under his heavy weight.

I recognized the familiar, arrogant breathing pattern instantly.

It was Ryan.

My father had clearly bailed him out of jail in record time and sent him straight back to finish the job.

Ryan whispered my name into the dark basement, his voice dripping with venom and mock sympathy.

He told me that I could walk away completely unharmed if I just handed over the black leather ledger.

He claimed that the family never wanted to hurt me, but my stubbornness was forcing their hand.

I knew he was lying, because people with loaded guns in the dark do not leave witnesses.

I clutched the master ledger tightly against my chest and gripped the kitchen knife in my other hand.

I crept silently behind the large central HVAC unit, using the metal ductwork to shield my body.

Ryan shined his light across the broken drywall partition and let out a victorious, cruel laugh.

He saw the open safe and immediately realized I had already discovered their dirty secrets.

He began wildly tearing apart the basement storage boxes, screaming that I had ruined everything for the family.

I used his chaotic, noisy tantrum to my absolute advantage.

I slipped off my shoes and tiptoed silently toward the old wooden staircase leading up to the kitchen.

I reached the bottom step just as Ryan turned his flashlight toward the HVAC unit.

I scrambled up the stairs as fast as humanly possible, completely abandoning stealth for pure speed.

Ryan shouted angrily and fired a single shot that shattered the wooden handrail inches from my face.

I burst through the door and sprinted across the dark kitchen floor toward the front entrance.

I grabbed my car keys from the counter, desperate to reach my vehicle and drive to the state police headquarters.

I threw open the front door and ran barefoot onto the wooden porch into the freezing night air.

I did not make it to my car.

Megan was standing directly at the bottom of the porch stairs, holding a high-voltage stun gun.

She smiled wickedly and pulled the trigger, sending two metal prongs flying directly into my chest.
