Chapter 4 - The Dark House

Total darkness swallowed the inside of my dream home, turning my safe haven into a terrifying trap.
I crept silently into the kitchen and grabbed the heaviest, sharpest chef knife from the wooden block on the counter.
I held my breath and listened closely to the heavy footsteps echoing from the back deck.
Whoever was outside was systematically checking every single door and window for a weakness.
I knew I could not simply hide in the corner and wait to become a helpless victim.
I remembered buying a heavy-duty tactical flashlight for emergencies when I first moved in.
I retrieved the flashlight from the hallway closet, keeping the beam turned off to avoid giving away my position.
I tiptoed down the wooden stairs into the unfinished basement, hoping to find a safe place to hide until morning.
The basement smelled of damp earth and old construction materials left behind by the previous owners.
I accidentally bumped into a freshly built drywall partition that seemed completely out of place in the old cellar.
I ran my hands along the smooth surface and noticed a faint, hollow seam hidden near the bottom edge.
I used the tip of my kitchen knife to pry the loose drywall panel away from the wooden studs.
The panel popped off with a loud snap, revealing a small, hidden concrete alcove.
I turned on my tactical flashlight and aimed the bright beam directly into the dark space.
A heavy steel floor safe was bolted securely into the concrete foundation.
I noticed a thin layer of dust on the digital keypad, but three specific numbers were completely wiped clean.
I used my extensive background in compliance and security protocols to guess the simple six-digit combination.
The heavy steel door clicked open with a satisfying mechanical hum.
Inside the safe were stacks of offshore bank statements, fake property deeds, and a master ledger bound in black leather.
I flipped through the pages and saw my former boss’s name connected to dozens of illegal shell companies.
The lake house was not just a random piece of real estate on the open market.
It was previously owned by one of the shell companies used to launder millions of dollars.
I had accidentally purchased the exact location where they hid their most damning financial evidence.

I heard the basement door at the top of the stairs slowly creak open.
A bright beam of light swept across the wooden steps, followed by the terrifying sound of a loaded gun racking a round.
