Chapter 5 - The Legal Slaughter

Two days later, Julian was served.
He had expected the divorce papers he threw on my hospital bed to be processed smoothly. Instead, a process server handed him a stack of documents so thick it looked like a phone book.
He and Serena were sitting in the living room of the house he had stolen from me, surrounded by unpaid bills.
Julian tore open the envelope.
The first document was a temporary restraining order, preventing him from coming within five hundred yards of me or the babies.
The second document was an emergency injunction voiding the transfer of the house to Serena, citing it as an illegal transfer of marital assets obtained under extreme duress and medical incapacity.
The third document was a civil suit from Vanguard Holdings for corporate embezzlement.
"What does this mean?" Serena asked, looking at the papers over his shoulder.
"It means we're going to lose the house," Julian whispered, pulling at his hair. "It means she’s taking full custody. It means I'm going to jail."
"Jail?!" Serena shrieked, backing away from him. "No! You told me you were rich! You told me she was a pathetic nobody!"
"She lied to me!" Julian screamed, throwing a vase across the room, watching it shatter against the wall. "She played the sweet, innocent housewife for four years while she had billions of dollars backing her up!"
"I am not going down for your fraud, Julian!" Serena yelled, grabbing her coat.
"You're already implicated!" Julian snarled, grabbing her arm. "Where do you think the money for this house came from? Where do you think the money for that Birkin came from? If I go down, you are coming with me as an accessory."

Serena looked at him with pure hatred. The charming, wealthy man she had seduced had vanished. In his place was a desperate, cornered rat.
They were trapped in a cage together, and the walls were closing in fast.
