Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

A year later.

The sun was shining brightly over the Vanguard estate. The gardens were in full bloom, a sea of vibrant colors and sweet scents.

I was sitting on a picnic blanket on the vast lawn, watching my three one-year-old daughters toddle around, chasing a butterfly. Their laughter filled the air, pure and untainted by the darkness of the man who had fathered them.

My father walked out of the house, holding a tray with two glasses of iced tea. He sat down beside me, watching his granddaughters with a proud smile.

"You've done an incredible job with them, Clara," he said softly.

"We did an incredible job, Dad," I corrected him.

I had officially taken my place on the board of Vanguard Holdings. I wasn't just a mother; I was a businesswoman, fierce and uncompromising. The pain of the past had forged me into someone Julian wouldn't even recognize.

My phone buzzed on the blanket. It was an email from my private investigator, giving me his final requested update.

Serena was working the register at a fast-food restaurant two towns over, living in a cramped studio apartment, entirely cut off from the glamorous world she had tried to steal her way into.

Julian was mopping floors in a federal penitentiary.

I locked my phone and tossed it aside. They were no longer my problem. They were just footnotes in a story I had completely rewritten.

One of my daughters, Maya, stumbled over and collapsed into my lap, giggling uncontrollably. I wrapped my arms around her, breathing in the scent of baby shampoo and sunshine.

Julian had thrown divorce papers on my bed and told me my life was over. He had looked at a woman who had just brought three miracles into the world and thought he saw weakness.

He was wrong. My life hadn't ended in that hospital room.

It had just begun.
